Should actors put their health and values on the line for their jobs?
This past weekend on Facebook, I saw an entertainment story about Jonah Hill. Apparently the actor became deathly ill and had to be hospitalized for having to snort too much vitamin powder that was a substitution for coke in Wolf of Wall Street.
This made me ask myself should actors be forced to risk their health, personal beliefs, or relationships all just to make a movie believable or to make sure job offers keep coming?
I know ultimately the actor has a choice and decides on their own whether to participate. But what about when the script changes after an actor has signed on and a scene was added that may include a sex scene they didn’t want, because in reality they are in a committed relationship and worry about the repercussions the scene could cause the relationship.
What about when you’re asked to do a scene with fake marijuana, fake coke or to shoot up water or some other liquid. Sure it maybe fake but snorting anything could cause you to get pneumonia or bronchitis like Jonah found out. And shooting water into your veins is just as dangerous. You could develop infections, damage your veins etc.
I asked an actor friend of mine why they went along with damaging their health & moral values… their reply was simple. They said they do it for fear of never working in the industry again. If they are deemed difficult the role offers will dry up. Sometimes they said they also did it because of a director or fellow actor they had dreamed of working with is also in the movie. The money is a big draw too and the challenge of pulling off a difficult role.
They also stated if they were to break their contract with the studio they would be required to pay big money to get out of the deal and they would possibly never work again because of it. My final question to my anonymous source was do you hate yourself for compromising your health and or beliefs? After a long uncomfortable silence their response was yes. They hated themselves afterward and dealt with guilt issues.
In closing, I wish movie studios and actors would use special camera angles or devices to fake ingesting drugs so no herbal vitamin powder or water is needed to be used. And sex can be simulated or the actor given the choice to bail out and use body doubles so they don’t have to risk their real life relationships for our entertainment and the studios and directors satisfaction. Until next time I hope your dreams come true!
