SMU vs Tulane Preview
(Rose Baca/The Dallas Morning News)

The SMU Mustangs (9-4, 1-0) visit Tulane (4-9, 0-1) for their first American Athletic Conference road game of the season after opening with an 82-54 win against East Carolina at Moody Coliseum on Wednesday. The Mustangs have won seven of the past eight games.

For Tulane, this will be their first home game in nearly four weeks as they opened conference play on the road at Cincinnati. The Green Wave would like to forget that game, they lost 93-61 and the 30+ point differential shows the dominance the Bearcats had.

The Green Wave and Mustangs split last season’s home-and-home series, as the Wave scored a hard-fought 73-70 home win on Jan. 4, 2018 behind 20 points by Cameron Reynolds to snap a five-game skid in the all-time series. SMU countered with a 73-62 win in Dallas just 16 days later despite 12 made 3-pointers by the Wave and a 27-point performance by Melvin Frazier.

Tulane is a much more difficult team to face at their home arena–they average 68.2 points per game as a team, but are scoring 75.2 points per contest on their home floor this season. The Green Wave also shoot 49.2 percent overall and 39.2 percent beyond the 3-point arc at Fogelman in Devlin, opposed to 39 percent overall and 30 percent from deep in games away from their friendly confines.

Preseason All-AAC selection Jahmal McMurray is leading SMU in scoring (18.5, 4th AAC) and is hitting 41.6 percent from 3-point range (5th AAC). His 3.6 threes made per game lead the AAC and rank 13th nationally.

In the first six games of the season, opponents were scoring 71.2 points and 46.5 percent shooting. Since Jarrey Foster returned to the lineup, the Mustangs are holding opponents to 62.6 points and 40.3 percent on field goals.

Prediction

LINE: -10.5 SMU

O/U: 140

Dan’s Bet: -10.5 SMU

SMU is not as good as they were a few years ago under Larry Brown, but they are a lock-down defensive team and should be able to handle the Green Wave’s lack of skill players. It won’t be high-scoring, but the Mustangs should win by double-digits.

Score Prediction: SMU 66 Tulane 51
