South Carolina vs Florida International Preview

South Carolina vs Florida International

The South Carolina Gamecocks (4-1) finally return to the court after an eight-day layoff. Their last game, a victory over Western Michigan on Nov.19th was the last time we have seen Frank Martin and company.

The Gamecocks have had at least four double-digit scorers in four of their five games – but no USC player has scored more than 15 points in a game this season. They are led by three-point shooter Frank Booker who is tied for fifth in the SEC in three-point attempts (38) and makes them at a solid 38 percent rate–good for 20th in the SEC.

Florida International (2-3) is in the middle of a huge rebuild and coach Anthony Evans knows tonight won’t be easy. The Panthers return zero starters from last year’s dreadful 7-win ball club. That could be looked at as a positive, but that hasn’t stopped others from looking down at the program. Florida International was picked to finish dead last in the preseason Conference USA poll and their early season games show that it is probably an accurate prediction.

The Panthers are yet to beat a Division I program this season, losing to Stetson, Elon and Milwaukee. Their two victories are against sub par competition– Florida Memorial (NAIA) and Concordia St. Paul (NCAA Division II).

Frank Martin and Players Reunion

Despite being some 650 miles away from Colonial Life Arena, the Gamecocks should feel some comforts of home Monday evening as Miami native and FIU alumnus Frank Martin makes his return.

A pro-USC crowd should also be on hand in support of freshman Felipe Haase (Miami Christian High School) and Ibrahim Famouke Doumbia (Miami County Day).

Prediction

There isn’t that much that can be said about this matchup. The Gamecocks should demolish the Panthers as Florida International is one of the worst programs in Division I this season. The only thing going the Panthers way is the potential rust of South Carolina–as mentioned earlier, they haven’t played a game in eight days and they could be rusty out of the gate. With Frank MArtin at the helm, I doubt that happens, but the Panthers can wish…
