St. Peter’s vs Rider Preview and Prediction
St. Peter’s vs Rider Preview
The St. Peter’s Peacocks (8-11, 2-6) head to Lawrenceville, NJ to take on the Rider Broncs (14-7, 7-2) for a nationally televised MAAC contest. The Peacocks will attempt to split the season series and end a four-game backslide while also looking to avoid being swept by Rider for the first time since 2014-15.
Rider and Saint Peter’s are meeting for the 64th time in the two programs’ histories, with the Broncs owning a 34-29 lead in the all-time series. The Peacocks and Broncs have split their last 10 meetings, going 5-5 against each other.
Last time out
The teams met in Jersey City just last week on January 18, with Rider stealing an 88-84 road win. The home loss for Saint Peter’s was the first of its kind this season, ending the team’s hopes at matching the 1986-87 Peacocks 6-0 home record. Redshirt-Junior guard Davauhnte Turner set a career-high of 34 points in the game.
Broncs riding high
The Broncs are riding a three-game win streak that began with last week’s win over the Peacocks and also includes Marist and Fairfield. Rider is currently in second place in the MAAC standings with a 7-2 conference mark. The Broncs boast a perfect 3-0 MAAC home record and are 6-1 overall in Lawrenceville.
How can St. Peter’s steal a victory?
DEFENSE. After finishing fourth in the country in scoring defense last season, John Dunne’s squad is back among the nation’s best in the category this year. The Peacocks are again at the forefront of the MAAC defensively, as Dunne’s teams have been for the past four seasons, dating back to 2013-14. Saint Peter’s currently leads the conference in scoring defense, field goal percentage defense, and turnover margin.
One away from 100…
With his next win, Rider Head Coach Kevin Baggett would become the 6th Rider Head Coach all-time to compile 100 victories at the school. He has posted a 99-86 record and reached the MAAC Quarterfinals in each of his first five seasons. Baggett was the 2015 MAAC Coach of the Year.
St. Peter’s boasts one of the most impressive defensive units in the MAAC–but this Rider team is difficult to beat, especially when playing at home. I expect Rider’s winning streak to continue and coach Kevin Baggett will bag his 100th win at the school.
