Stephen Piscotty set to join Cardinals
The 2015 season has seen an influx of young talent called up to the big leagues, and very few of them have been a disappointment. Whether it be the smooth-swinging third baseman from the Cubs, Kris Bryant, or the always-powerful Astros’ shortstop Carlos Correa, this season has brought forth a new wave of talent. Baseball fans can now add the St. Louis Cardinals’ No. 1 prospect (No. 79 overall) to the list of call-ups, outfielder Stephen Piscotty, though the team has yet to confirm.
Stephen Piscotty is being added to the Cardinals roster because of the inconsistent play of Mark Reynolds, who is filling the void left at first base by Matt Adams. Adams tore his right quadricep muscle and had surgery on May 29, and will be out for up to four months. Mark Reynolds has tried his hardest to be a solid replacement at first base, but he is only hitting .229 (his career batting average), with eight home runs, 20 runs scored and 33 runs batted in.
With the call-up of Stephen Piscotty, the Cardinals are hoping for some more production from their first base slot (or outfield, which is his main position) in the lineup. This season, Piscotty has hit .272 in 87 games with the Cardinals’ Triple-A club, the Memphis Redbirds (PCL). He also has 11 home runs, 54 runs scored and 41 runs batted in. He has started the last six games at first base for the Redbirds, but is normally their everyday right fielder.
From a fantasy standpoint, he will probably have dual-position eligibility at first base and outfield, so he might be worth adding on your roster. He hasn’t proven what he can do in the majors, but you can look at another Cubs prospect, Kyle Schwarber, for evidence that these prospects can hit at the big league level the minute that they are called up.
If you are a Cardinals fan, you are probably excited to see what he can do for the club. As a baseball fan, expect Stephen Piscotty to take Major League Baseball by storm while continuing the dominant play of all the young talent that we have seen this season.
