Strengths:

  • Speed
  • Play recognition
  • Doesn’t miss tackles
  • Natural hands
  • Good awareness

Analysis: Cravens could be one of the most versatile players in the draft, playing most of his career at USC at the strong safety position, but will likely make the move to outside linebacker in the pros. He’s at his best attacking the run, showing excellent recognition and terrific closing speed on outside runs to slice past pulling linemen and lasso ball-carriers for big losses. He has nine career interceptions, showing his ball-hawking skills and ability to play against the pass. He will be able to hang with tight ends at the next level in coverage, and can lineup all over the field. He is a defensive coordinator’s dream.

Weaknesses:

  • Can play out of control
  • Bites on play-action
  • Doesn’t fit all defensive schemes

Analysis: Similar to former USC great Troy Polamalu, Cravens can play out of control at times, committing to a running lane before the ball carrier (sometimes he was right, sometimes he was wrong). Cravens is a versatile and instinctive defender with two years of all-conference recognition already under his belt, but will need a certain defensive scheme to succeed like he did in college. He lacks the size of an ideal outside backer, and doesn’t have the coverage skills to play in the secondary 100% of the time, but similar to Shaq Thompson coming out of Washington last year, when he is on the field, he makes plays.

Draft Prediction: 2nd Round

NFL Comparison: Shaq Thompson
