Tarvarus McFadden Draft Profile

Tarvarus McFadden draft profile

Strengths:

  • Tall with impressive wingspan
  • Excels in press-and-drape coverage
  • Annoys wideouts with jabs at release and keeps bugging them inside their routes
  • Rarely loses battles for underthrown balls
  • Flashed brilliant ball skills in 2016 with eight interceptions
  • Quick to turn head and find the ball
  • Allowed completion rate of just 39.7 percent this season
  • Excellent high-point defender with desired timing and hand-eye coordination

Analysis: Tarvarus McFadden is a press corner with long arms and disruptive qualities but lacking in foot quickness and makeup speed. McFadden put together a highlight reel of impressive interceptions with NFL-caliber ball skills, but his ball production dropped sharply this year. He is a pesky corner that continues to annoy wideouts with press coverage and stickiness throughout their route. Ball skills are there and his 2016 tape was riddled with great plays. His 2017 tape took a step back, but his skills are still evident. He is quick to turn his head and find the ball. Quarterbacks struggled to complete passes against him, less than 40 percent completion percentage in 2017.

Weaknesses:

  • Lacks long speed to carry vertical targets downfield
  • Allowed too many touchdowns as starter
  • Could be limited by scheme and matchups
  • Play strength falls below the mark
  • Plays with tall pad level and is slow to decelerate and chase comeback routes
  • 2016 interceptions turned into 2017 passes broken up
  • Had four pass interference penalties this year
  • Needs more toughness as tackler

Analysis: Tarvarus McFadden’s draft stock took a hit in 2017 and hisĀ 4.68 forty at the Combine seemed to prove what the tape showed regarding his long speed or lack thereof. McFadden has cover talent, but may be forced into a zone scheme to cover up for his speed concerns. McFadden will need to tighten up his coverage technique and become a much better tackler in order to find meaningful snaps as a pro. He allowed too many touchdowns as a starter and was beat on occasion in his game tape. Play strength is below average and his lack of commitment in run support has scouts concerned. Needs to wrap up better–no more arm tackles. Too many penalties.
