‘The Birth of a Nation’ Controversy

I want to start off by saying I do not condone rape nor do I condone people lying about a rape happening when there wasn’t one. This was a hard article to write because a friend of mine was raped and she is still not over it. I don’t think anyone can be.

I was reading all the positive reviews about this movie and the actors. Unfortunately there is controversy surrounding it. That controversy may be what keeps this movie from winning an Oscar and some people are boycotting it.

Many years ago when the director/lead male star of the movie (Nate Parker) was in college, he made a poor decision at best. Like most college kids he and a friend whose name I will leave out attended a party. They met a girl who was drunk—I think just about everyone attending was drunk. The girl left WILLINGLY with Nate and his friend to go back to his apartment.

All three participated in sexual acts. The next morning Nate and his friend were in handcuffs the girl claimed rape. Toxicology proved no date rape drugs were present. Nate’s friend got four months in jail. Nate was acquitted.

The part that upset me was that all these years later the man still can’t leave this behind him. As of the printing of this article despite all the wonderful reviews the Oscars are forfeiting this movies nomination. Whether your for or against Parker it doesn’t matter but I feel the movie and the other actors shouldn’t be kept from the awards their performances would have given them. Hey Oscar you’re supposed to only judge if the movies good enough.

Hope I didn’t make too many people mad at me. Until the next article, I hope your dreams come true!
