The Crow

Many people, fans and non fans alike are well aware that The Crow remake has been “in production” for over six years. It’s said to be possibly cursed. Is it being sabotaged by a Venable spirit just like the main character Eric Draven from the story Originally written by James O’Barr? There’s actually a mythology surrounding this movie.

Recent events with the remake are even starting to make skeptics like me believe something strange is afoot. For instance, every actor has dropped out, every director, and there have been a bunch of production issues. Is it the idea of disrespecting Brandon Lee.. Who played Draven in the original and was killed in a freak prop accident.. Stopping this from going through? It’s similar to the “curse” on the original Poltergeist series. That remake still happened however.

There are many rumors and disputes surrounding Brandon Lee’s death in The Crow. Rumors like the death scene, which were different actors who were using the prop weapon that ended his life…it wasn’t accidental, and also eerily understandable, the Lee family curse. He is the son of classic Kung fu actor Bruce Lee. Bruce..get this.. Also died in an accident while filming a movie. Here is what actually happened.. After years of hiding out and deciding to take a break from acting due to the trauma of this accident, actor Micheal Massee (played Villian Funboy) came forward with the truth and to put rumors to rest. He was using the prop gun during a scene which was depicting Eric Draven and his fiancĂ© Shelly Webster’s deaths. The prop gun contained a piece of shrapnel that penetrated Lee and killed him. Total freak accident.

So far a few actors have dropped the project including Luke Evans (Dracula Untold) and most recently Jack Jutson (Boardwalk Empire). Both said to have taken on different projects. Just bad luck for the film makers and producers? Or is it actors scared of the backlash because of the legions of fans against this remake? Not sure, but directors are bailing as well. The last director to go, the one who worked with the project for what seemed like years was Corin Hardy. There were rumors of arguments with producers and company heads. First to back out was director F. Javier Gutierrez. He was the original choice for this movie.

There are new choices lined up.. that doesn’t mean the actors will bite, but the offers are said to be out there… One is up and coming actor Nicholas Hoult (X-men: First class and others) we’ve been seeing him a lot. Second is Jack O’Connell (300:Rise of an Empire) also it’s said Forest Whitaker is in negotiations for a major role. I can only guess that would be Erie Hudson’s role. Let’s wait and see if this happens. If more strange occurrences ensue or productions are haulted another year or two, this skeptic may start really believing in “The Curse of the Crow”.

The Crow is this gal’s all-time favorite movie. As an 11-year-old, not even knowing someone died making the film, it was the first movie I felt I related to. Sarah was relatable. Also the first love story this tomboy ever fell for. It brought me into the world of the graphic novels and for this James O’Barr, I thank you. It wasn’t even a high budget masterpiece but even as an adult, I can watch it over and over and still feel something. As you can see I’m a mega fan. I am not going to jump down the throats of the people who want to remake this. Personally, I enjoy some remakes. As long as it lives up to O’Barr’s vision and the memory of Brandon Lee.. I’m of course, willing to watch it. Still, the question is.. Is it really cursed and are we just amping it up because someone passed away making it?– Much like The Dark Knight…Sorry. Someone had to say it.
