Not until recently was this player on the fantasy baseball radar. An injury to Braves closer Jason Grilli, who ruptured his Achilles, made the Atlanta Braves closer role available for the taking. Enter 32-year-old veteran reliever Jim Johnson. Johnson who posted back-to-back 50+ saves for the Orioles in 2012 and 2013 has bounced around since then, never being able to live up to the expectations his play demanded.

Last season, Johnson owned a 7.09 ERA in 53 innings between the Athletics and Tigers organizations, recording a paltry two saves the entire year. Now with the Braves, Johnson entered the season with little expectations, but injuries and solid play have him holding down Atlanta’s closer role.

So far in 2015, Johnson has seven saves with a 2.20 ERA  in 45 IP, numbers that deserve consideration on your fantasy team. Before last night when he picked up his seventh save allowing one run, he did not allow a run since June 8th. The most important factor to Johnson’s success has been the command of his pitches, something he struggled with in 2014. He has only walked one batter this month and has not allowed many base-runners during his outings all season, earning his lowest WHIP since 2012.

He is only owned in 50% of fantasy baseball leagues, giving owners the ability to put a waiver claim I for a closer who is guaranteed save opportunities. If you are in need of relief help, the waiver wire is usually desolate of valuable closers, so snagging Johnson would be a huge win for your team.
