the fate of the furious

Vin Diesel and the Fast and Furious crew are back for another ride in The Fate of the Furious. In their first complete film without the late Paul Walker, the cast continues on the journey, but it looks like some things will be changing in a big way. In a series that always focused on family and loyalty, the first full trailer for the eighth films showed us the exact opposite and it was jarring.

Dominic Toretto has always been the head of his family, so to see him go against them was strange to see for die-hard fans of the saga. The film’s villain, who is referred to as “the definition of high-tech terrorism”, is played by Charlize Theron. I’m sure she threatened his loved ones, but watching the explosions and damage Dom leaves in his wake was a lot to take in. And let’s not forget that kiss right in front of Letty! Sure, Letty went against the team, but she didn’t have her memories and came back to them in the end. What’s Dom’s deal in The Fate of the Furious? A better question, how will the team recover from his betrayal because I’d be done with someone if they flipped my car and got me put in jail.

Another absurd occurrence that is apparently happening in The Fate of the Furious is “partnership” between the team and Shaw. He killed Han and tried to kill them all and now they’re going to work with him?  It seems the writers are looking to bring the characters and their relationships to the edge of no return to freshen up this long-running saga. I guess we’ll have to wait until April to see all of these seemingly impossible situations play out.

Here’s to hoping the writers have a solid and convincing story and explanation for why Dom goes this far. If not, critics, especially those who are tired of the series will shred the film. I love Fast and Furious and am excited to see the next film, but I hope the writers have a way out of this if they really plan to make two more films. Final thought: Who came up with the idea of that giant wrecking ball?
