The Flash ‘Borrowing Problems From The Future’ review and recap
The Flash returned from its Mid-Season break this week with a very emotional and fun episode. This episode set up a lot of things for the second half of the season and it leaves a lot to get excited for.
Spoilers for the new episode of The Flash from this point on.
So from the get go of the episode we can already tell that the Flashpoint storyline is more or less finished for the moment, the opening has changed from Barry talking about Flashpoint to him talking about Savitar. I know a lot of people will be annoyed about this considering how big of a comic storylne that Flashpoint is and I admit that I was also a bit disappointed at first that they didn’t go all out and make it a huge thing but I’m happy now. Savitar’s storyline isn’t just another speedster who wants to be the fastest, his storyline is that Barry and team Flash did something at some point to turn him into this, and it looks like Savitar won’t show up till the last few episodes and the majority of this season will be about Barry trying to change the events leading up to Iris’ death.
The episode mainly dealt with Barry and Iris being together and how Barry needed to figure out how he could change the future and save Iris, this led to Jared Morillo AKA Plunder showing up and Barry realizing that if he sends Plunder to prison then he is just helping create the future he is so desperately trying to avoid. Barry was taking his frustration out on Wally who was now in full Kid Flash mode (I loved the cop saying they should send Wally to Keystone as a cool little Easter Egg). This was one thing that made me get a little angry at Barry, I mean Wally saved his life and Barry was taking his anger out on him, I understand why he was but it still wasn’t okay. Barry eventually started to let people in and he told Iris about the future, that was a very emotional scene and was full of the feels.
After letting the team (besides Joe) know about the future, Cisco got into Vibe mode and took Barry on a trip back to the future so that they could learn all they could in order to change it. This was were a lot of the cool setups came in. the news headlines talked about the city recovering after a gorilla attack, alluding to the Gorilla Grodd episode, the Music Mesiter signing a music deal, which will be the Flash/ Supergirl music episode, Joe honored at city hall, good for him and Killer Frost still at large which doesn’t bode well for Caitlin but considering how this episode and the rest of the season will be all about changing the future, I hope they find a way to change hers.
On the subject of the Caitlin, she had a pretty big storyline this week in which she desperately looked for a way to stop her Killer Frost powers, this led her to Julian who is now joining team Flash. I’m happy about joining the team because I really hoped he was going to be more than just an unlikable person who was Dr. Alchemy and it seems they’re taking him down a path that will redeem him. Danielle Panabaker pulled out the big guns this week as the scenes where she told her friends how much she needed to get rid of her powers had me definitely feeling for her. She got a really cool power dampening necklace out of it though.
Meanwhile during all this H.R was working on his Star Labs museum and made a very weird Cisco hologram. I gotta give props to how well Tom Cavanagh can play all the different versions of Wells. But H.R did get a lot of character development this week as he even contributed in a good way to Barry’s future problem as he used the domino effect. In the end H.R got his museum open but if it wasn’t obvious before that something was off with him well it definitely is now as H.R has a visitor from his own Earth coming after him…..
I really enjoyed this episode and I’m looking forward to the direction that the show is going in it’s back half.
