'The Flash': 'Duet' Review

This may just have been the craziest episode of The Flash that we’ve ever seen, but it is definitely one of my favorites. Barry and Kara take a trip into a very musical world, spoilers for The Flash from this point on.

This was a very anticipated episode, it was announced months ago and while a lot of people were very skeptical and thought it wouldn’t work (which to be honest, it’d be very easy for this episode to have failed), I was always looking forward to it, it seemed like it’d be great fun and I really hope Music Meister comes back next season to show us another musical. I think part of the reason this episode worked so well is because the team embraced the craziness, it seemed like the cast were genuinely enjoying themselves during this episode and that added to how fun it was.

I will say though, I’m kind of disappointed with how little original songs they had and just songs in general, we had a song roughly every 9 minutes and I get that they can’t just have the entire episode filled with songs because you know, they have to tell a story as well but still, the two original songs they did have “Super Friend” and “Runnin’ home to you” were both the best of the episode and were really well done. This also marks the first time that characters from Supergirl besides Kara have crossed over to a different show, we got to see Mon-El and J’onn interact with Team Flash and we even saw Winn in the musical world, and surprisingly Jeremy Jordan can sing really well.It looks like these mini Flash/ Supergirl crossovers are going to become a thing every season which i’m all for, I kind of hope we start getting more each season to be honest, and hopefully next season it takes place on both episodes rather than on just Flash (and 30 seconds in Supergirl). One of my biggest gripes with both The Flash and Supergirl this year is all of the unnecessary relationship drama and in both Flash and Supergirl’s last episode, the main characters broke up with their partners, this made it seemed like both shows were now going to have a huge relationship plotline in their next episodes but Music Meister was able to save us from that.

The story of Music Meister (Played by the awesome Darren Criss) is that he sees the relationship problems Kara and Barry are both having, so he sends them both into this musical world so that they both realize the problems they are having and they get back with Mon-El and Iris, it was actually kind of a great story and the way they went about it was incredibly clever. Another very fun part of the episode involved an unexpected and great team-up of Kid Flash, Vibe and Martian Manhunter costumed up and all. I thought it’d at least be next season of both shows before we saw something as cool as this, and the way the three of them took down Music Meister was especially fun.

The version of Malcolm Merlyn in the music world was very different from his normal self but he was still the bad guy, having his son (Mon-El) being called Tommy was a nice little easter egg. The versions of Joe and Martin Stein were both also different but still fun, having them be together was unexpected but a great touch. And I also have to add how fun it is to see Melissa Benoist and Grant Gustin sing a duet together, that song was one of the funnest and nicest Arrowverse scene I’ve seen yet.

THE VERDICT

9.5/10       The Flash gave us a very fun episode in the shape of a musical
