‘The Flash’ Recap and Review: “Blocked”
Tuesday’s The Flash began with a look at what went down between this season’s baddie and Gridlock. The lightning-shaped blade we saw last week absorbed Gridlock’s energy before the attacker stabbed and killed him. Later, our bad guy went to work where his co-worker noticed his injury.
The next day, Nora and Barry told everyone the truth and Iris decided that they were going to do whatever necessary to make sure that future didn’t become a reality. While Cecile struggled with the loss of her powers and Ralph and Caitlin tried to help Cisco get over Cynthia, a meta named Vanessa Jansen got out of prison and killed Bobby Moretti, one-half of the arms dealing Moretti Brothers. She used her powers to create a block and squish him.
At the scene, Nora followed Barry and posed as an intern. They learned that a block on the ground was actually a human body. Elsewhere, Iris followed her father’s advice and made herself busy by writing an article on the attack and William Lang’s (Gridlock) murder. She spoke with Captain Singh and a convoy guard who revealed that the only person killed was Lang while everyone else was just knocked out.
When they located Vanessa, the Flash and XS went after her and saved Bobby’s brother, Bruno. Instead of listening to her dad, Nora went after Vanessa and ended up stuck in one of her blocks. She was tossed across the city, forcing Barry to save her and while Vanessa escaped. Despite his funk, Cisco nicknamed Vanessa Block. Once it was confirmed that Nora was okay, Barry tried to give her a psychics lesson on being a speedster but she thought she knew better. She tried to show off but ended up hitting Barry with lightning and destroying a glass board in the lab.
While Iris continued her research into Lang’s murder and Barry went to Joe for advice, Cisco found Caitlin who was avoiding investigating her father’s death certificate. She was upset that if it turned out that her father was alive, it meant that he didn’t want to be in her life. The conversation also made Cisco realize that he needed to move on but Caitlin still had a chance to change things with her dad. At S.T.A.R. Labs, Barry showed Nora footage of his early days as a speedster to get her to realize that it took time to get better.
That night, Bruno went after Block with more back up. Nora figured that tracking the weather could help them track her. When they get there, they sped Bruno and his minions away but Barry was caught in one of Block’s…blocks. Nora sped around the area while Block tired herself out by firing at her. By the time Ralph and Cisco vibed to the scene, Nora had gotten the dampening handcuffs on her. Just when they thought everything was okay, our blade carrying villain showed up and stabbed Block.
While Nora rushed Block to the hospital, the blade negated Barry, Ralph, and Cisco’s powers. They got their butts kicked and Iris recognized a similar sound from bodycam footage and warned Barry that they needed to escape. Before the hooded figure could stab Barry, Nora arrived and called out for her dad. Only then did the figure stop and leave. Later, Cisco vibed the fake death certificate and Caitlin saw her mother before Iris showed everyone the bodycam footage comparing the sounds. Nora recognized it as the sound of a cicada, leaving everyone to wonder what she knew.
Final thoughts on The Flash 5.02 “Blocked”
I’m actually surprised team Flash encountered the bad guy this early in the season and that we saw his face. It makes me wonder if it’s a similar plot to the Thinker where they’ll have a big loss or midseason failure that’ll motivate them to fight harder during the second half of the season. I’m glad to see Iris working on another story and hope she can be more in her element with that this season. I enjoyed all the comical moments of trying to help Cisco through his break up and I’m glad that they brought it full circle in a way that he was able to help Caitlin with her own personal struggles.
I’m giving “Blocked” an 8 out of 10.
The Flash airs Tuesdays at 8 PM on CW.
