The Flash “Shade” Recap and Review
This episode marks the beginning of something new. It is going to be crazy on the Flash now and this episode starts that path.
We jump right in with Wally getting dreams of his Earth 2 powers. Immediately everyone bar Wally recognise that this is the work of Dr. Alchemy, so Barry tells Wally about who he was in “Flashpoint”. These visions continue and Wally hears Alchemy’s voice throughout the episode but meanwhile there is a new threat. What can only be described as a shadow kills a man, forcing the Flash to come up with a plan to stop him. H.R. names this meta “Shade” because he appeared on Earth 19. Gorilla Grodd also exists there as do many other gorillas, which is comforting to know. Cisco needs to step up his naming game.
They figure out how to defeat Shade and do it pretty quickly. Putting power-dampener handcuffs on him when they defeat him. The same ones Caitlin steals to dampen her powers. Cisco initially blames H.R. For stealing them before Caitlin comes clean about her powers. She asks Cisco to vibe the future and he sees her as Killer Frost fighting him as Vibe. The Killer Frost powers are revealed to the rest of the team, much to Caitlin’s dismay who worries she will have to leave. Barry feels guilty for causing it.
Wally West agrees to be locked up temporarily whilst they stop Alchemy but team Flash need him to lead them to Alchemy. With a S.W.A.T team on their side, Wally and co. enter Alchemy’s lair. S.W.A.T and the Flash burst in, bring down the other cult members, and place Alchemy under arrest. Alchemy warns them this is a mistake, and he was not wrong. A speedster, only visible to the Flash, runs in and pins Barry against the wall. He reveals he is “Savitar”, the God of Speed. Yes, Barry has now managed to get on the wrong side of a God. During this commotion, Wally is put in a cocoon of sorts after he touches the energy stone that Alchemy dropped. He should just listen for once.
Now things are really heating up for the Flash. The inevitable Wally West meeting Dr. Alchemy episode provided much more action and drama than I thought. I was annoyed to see a whiny Wally again who couldn’t see that he was being manipulated, my main criticism over the past couple of episodes. This, however, was rectified as he agreed to being locked up then led Team Flash to Alchemy. That was a much better Wally who seemed more like a hero. Shade was a filler for what was to come, which was a let-down. He was easily taken down and barely talked about.
The ending of the episode was insane. This was arguably the best end to an episode this season. Savitar, who looks much different to his comic counterpart but I love the look, had a fantastic introduction. Already looking incredibly powerful, his one line informing Barry who he is has already set him up as quite possibly the toughest villain Barry had faced. I enjoyed seeing Savitar pin Barry against the wall from a normal persons perspective and it seems Savitar is the leader of this whole operation. It reminded me of Zoom’s introduction. Now there is Alchemy and Savitar, a deadly duo to take down.
I have a strong feeling that Julian is related to this. He is acting suspicious, such as not showing up to work or saying there’s a lot that Barry didn’t know about him. Plus he’s English who have a good track record of being villains. The Killer Frost story had a fresh twist this week with everyone finding out and it seems Caitlin will be the star of the next episode as Killer Frost. We were even teased a Vibe vs Killer Frost fight. Lastly, a special mention to H.R. for more hilarious scenes. My favorite was when he was flirting with Joe’s date (not as good as Iris punching Wally).
A high quality episode of The Flash.
