The Flash ‘The Once and Future Flash’ Review and Recap
The Flash returned from its small hiatus this week with a new episode that had some good and had some bad as we got a glimpse into the dark but hopeful future of Team Flash.
So this was a pretty anticipated episode for me, I was excited for a lot of reasons and those were that we would finally get to see the year 2024, which we’ve been teased about since the very first episode, this episode also aired on the 25th of April, the exact date in 2024 that Flash supposedly disappears, you have all of this and add it on with the seemingly confirmation that we would find out who Savitar is in this episode and you get something that looks amazing.
Unfortunately only one of those points above were touched on, we in fact see the 2024 from two months before Flash vanishes and we didn’t find out who Savitar is but despite these two things I actually did enjoy the episode that we ended up with. I will admit however that the cliffhanger Savitar tease at the end did very much annoy me and not because it was a cliffhanger but because they’re dragging the reveal out far too long, at this point I don’t really think whoever it is will live up to the hype.
Okay so let’s get into the good, we got to catch up with the post-Iris Team Flash and while they all seemed pretty down on themselves I loved how (besides Caitlin and Barry) everyone was pretty willing to jump back into the Team even though it had been so long. Future Cisco was my favorite, it was heartbreaking to see that he lost his hands to Killer Frost but despite everything that had happened, he was still full of hope and wanted The Flash to come back. It was also nice to see that he just wanted his best friend back, him trying every way he could to keep our Barry from going home was nice.
Julian hadn’t really changed much in the future, he works in a prison trying to keep Killer Frost from escaping and wreaking havoc on Central City and it was kind of scary to find out that she aligned herself with Savitar, it makes me think that she really could be too far gone as we’ve already seen glimpses of her and Cisco fighting in the future. I love Caitlin’s character and I don’t want her to become a villain but then again after every character on this show has been becoming like their comic book counterparts more and more, it was pretty obvious that eventually this was who she’d become.
H.R Wells was doing the best out of everyone, now owning Jitters Cafe, writing his famous books and wooing women left and right. I loved that even though he pretty much had everything he needed, he was still back on the Team in a Flash. Joe was shaken from Iris’ death naturally but I liked the way he didn’t just fall into a self-destructive hole like Barry had, Joe’s only serious issue was that Barry never tried to go to Joe after her death and it is kind of sad that Barry didn’t honor his promise to Iris in that way.
And on to Barry, the future Scarlet Speedster was more or less done with life, he didn’t want to help our Barry find out who Savitar is and he just saw the past version of himself as being on a futile mission to change something that couldn’t be changed. He had a breakthrough though and when The Flash of 2024 returned to fight Top and Mirror Master it was great, I loved the new suit and I really enjoyed the scene in which it’s revealed. I have a strong feeling we’ll be seeing that version of the suit in the present day really soon……
The Flash has me excited for the final four episodes with the promise that we will find out who Savitar is next week, but if they skip out on us again next week then it might taint how I view this season in the future.
8/10 The Flash returned with an enjoyable episode that showed us a future in which our hero fails.
