‘The Gifted’ Recap and Review: “meMento”
Last week on The Gifted, Kate was desperate to take down Reeva and the Inner Circle, prompting action from the others, while Lorna began to see another side of Reeva’s plans. “meMento” kicked off with a flashback to 1985. We got to see Andreas von Strucker aka one half of Fenris soon after losing his sister. Fans learned that modifications had been made to the music box that Lauren now has. Andreas told the shopkeeper who made the customizations that hope for his people rested in the box before killing him.
In the present, Lauren listened to the box’s tune while Reed worried over her changes and obsession with it. Kate was happy that Lauren was training for their next encounter with the Inner Circle. Later, Kate convinced Marcos to reach out for help despite John being sedated. At Inner Circle HQ, Reeva brought in new recruits that Lorna wasn’t a fan of. The trio was a crew that took down a cruise ship and were among mutants that escaped. Lorna saw them as mass murderers.
Reeva was able to play on Lorna’s future role to appease her temporarily. That night, Lauren fell asleep with the music box playing, causing her to see her great-grandmother’s death and lash out with her powers. In the morning, she lied about remembering the dream. Later, Kate gave Clarice advice about loving a man who puts his life in danger.
During his pursuit to find others to help, Marcos was pulled off the road by Lorna. Tensions and emotions between them were high, but Lorna tearfully asked for his help to stop Reeva and her new recruits. When Marcos told Clarice, she couldn’t believe it, especially when Marcos suggested they go to the Morlocks for information Reeva and co. She was not pleased with his hypocrisy. In the end, he apologized about his past behavior and planting doubt in John as they went underground.
On the other side of things, Purifiers turned things up a notch, which Officer Wilson wasn’t happy about because he felt left out with Turner giving his people orders. They raided different homes and safe houses, even cornering two teenagers in a shelter. Jace interviewed Rahul, a black teenager, who compared Purifiers to the klan. In the other room, Ted shot and killed Rahul’s friend, Leroy, believing he was using his powers by raising his hands. Later, Jace lied to police about how it happened.
Elsewhere, police burst into the Strucker’s home on reports of a disturbance. Before they could run Reed’s ID, Lauren created a distraction while hiding in her room and they left. Reed was less than happy about her using her powers that way. Underground, Marcos reunited with Glow and stopped himself from kissing her and Erg told Clarice he wouldn’t fight a war but he could give her something. That something was a tip about security in a train yard. That night, Marcos and Lorna shared a kiss before they went to the spot and discovered Reeva and anti-mutant newscaster Benedict Ryan exchanging information.
Across town, Lauren found strands of her great-grandparents hair in the music box. Something about the items caused her to go downstairs and threaten their landlord, believing he was the one who reported them to the police. Elsewhere John got a spark of hope when Evangeline called and told him to prepare for a meeting of all of the Mutant Underground regional leaders.
Final Take on last week’s The Gifted
“meMento” was a really good episode despite the lack of action with our main characters beyond Lauren’s using her powers throughout the episode. I’m glad that John finally opened up to Clarice and they were able to mend things, but I wonder how long those mended bridges will stand with the coming gathering of the Underground and whatever Erg has on his mind. If you’re a regular reader you know I’m not a fan of Jace, but his storyline with his grief and guilt feels real and I applaud the writers for that.
With Reeva’s plan slowly playing out, I’m interested to see how Lorna handles it and how her relationship with Marcos continues to shift. I’m a bit nervous about Lauren’s progression but excited for the excitement it’ll bring to the next few episodes. With that said, I’m giving “meMento” a 9 out 10.
The Gifted airs Tuesdays at 9 PM on FOX.
