‘The Good Doctor’ Recap and Review: “Xin”
With The Good Doctor getting renewed for a third season, we’re excited to catch up on the latest episodes! Here’s a recap of season 2, episode 13, “Xin”. The episode kicked off with Shaun running into a half-dressed Jake in his and Lea’s kitchen. While Shaun told her he was cool with having him over, Lea wasn’t sure.
While Glassman hid some of his symptoms from Shaun, Alex opened up to Claire about Mia. For this week’s patients, Neil, Alex, and Claire got a call for Sunny, a woman with a mechanical heart while Audrey, Morgan, and Shaun worked with Lana, an autistic patient who ran the risk of death because of a brain condition.
While Lana’s condition grew worse, Neil and his team met who they thought to be Sunny’s daughter. She told them that Sunny had gotten a transplant in Beijing several months ago. Things took a turn when another woman shows up claiming to be Sunny’s daughter and that she didn’t have a sister.
The first woman, Teresa, revealed that she met Sunny while she lived in a senior center 10 years ago. People mistook them for mother and daughter so they went with it. Teresa and Grace continually bumped heads throughout the episode, especially after Grace went to talk to Sunny. The conversation made Sunny emotional and Park had to rush to save her before her heart gave out. On full life support, Sunny could no longer be flown to Beijing. Teresa again criticized Grace, who then revealed that despite getting into Julliard, her mother was never supportive and cut her off.
After Shaun and Morgan got their patient to understand her potentially fatal situation, he went home to spend time with Dr. Glassman. It didn’t take long for Glassman to get irritated with Shaun. One of his outbursts caused made Shaun flustered. Back at St. Bonaventure, his patient, Lana, wanted to have sex before she died but the team denied her that chance.
Despite interrupting Jake and Lea’s time together, Shaun got his movie night but only after Lea explained to him that she and Jake would have some time alone without him. In the midst of a heart to heart with Grace, Alex was paged back to Sunny’s room where Neil announced that they didn’t have time to wait for a new heart. While that team worked on Sunny, Morgan tried to convince Lana’s roommate that he loved Lana, but he denied it. The conversation got Shaun thinking and he went to see Glassman, who came clean about his pain.
Glassman finally told Shaun that he didn’t want him there to help and that he couldn’t help. Frustrated Shaun went home and got advice from Lea before heading back to Bonaventure for Lana’s surgery. Her roommate arrived just in time for the procedure and kept her talking. In the waiting room, Park told both Grace and Teresa that Sunny’s surgery was a success and tried to get Grace to see that her mother had changed over the years.
As Sunny and Grace took the first steps over mending their relationship, Lana woke up. Javi revealed that he may be in love with her and she was alright with it. Their conversation got Shaun thinking before he went home. He blocked out Lea and Jake having sex with noise-canceling headphones before leaving to go to Dr. Glassman’s house. When he got there he found him sleeping next to the toilet. He propped him up and let him sleep against his shoulder.
Final take on The Good Doctor “Xin”
This episode carried so much emotion from Dr. Glassman and Shaun’s scenes to the storyline with Sunny and her daughters. Big shoutout to the Good Doctor writing team for putting together such an emotionally-charged hour of television. Episode 13’s standouts were definitely Richard Schiff, Freddie Highmore, and guest stars Vered Blonstein, Alex Plank, Emily Kuroda, and Vedette Lim. They all gave amazing performances. I’m looking forward to seeing how things play out with all of Shaun’s relationships and some of the other main storylines took a backseat in this episode.
I’m giving “Xin” a 9 out of 10.
