Anderson Spider Silva

Wow! The replacement for Jon Jones is here and it is none other than Anderson ‘Spider’ Silva. My immediate reaction to the news was utter shock much like the past 48 hours. Regarded as one of the greatest fighters the sport has ever seen, the former longtime middleweight kingpin will step in and fight Daniel Cormier in a non-title bout on less than two days notice. UFC 200 just got even more interesting.

Globo was the first news outlet to bring the news and TMZ confirmed the news late Thursday night. This is huge. Current Middleweight Champion Michael Bisping called this one on the Ultimate Fighter Weigh-In show earlier in the day, willing to bet money that Anderson would take the fight. It’s a good thing Dominick Cruz his co-analyst ┬ádidn’t take him up on his bet.

As a UFC fan for the last almost 15 years I must say that this is the most shocking two days I have ever experienced for better or for worse. I for one am extremely happy that I was able to follow this rollercoaster ride from start to finish and I am happy it has a happy ending. This matchup itself is extremely interesting and provides the UFC 200 event and the MMA fans with that particular dose of star-power that it needed in the wake of the Jon Jones fallout.

In his last fight Silva is coming off a loss to what was at the time a top five Middleweight in Michael Bisping. Silva is also coming off gallbladder surgery that forced him to pull out of a bout with Urijah Hall at UFC 198. So there are questions in my eyes as far as how healthy can Anderson Silva really be. July 9th we will find out. Silva has not registered an official win to his record in four years but the illusion and aura with The Spider is still very much alive and well. A big part of me wishes that this was still a title fight but being that this is a non-title bout there could very well be a catchweight agreement in place. Regardless Anderson Silva is back but more importantly UFC 200 is officially BACK.

Prediction: I have seen a lot of crazy moments as an MMA fan. Especially in 2016. While I think Anderson Silva is a formidable opponent against just about anybody in these circumstances it does not favor him. Cormier has had a full camp training for Jon Jones who is very similar to Anderson in terms of setting up his strikes. Also, Anderson is battling father time. While he has shown glimpses of his former self in previous fights he is not what he once was. I will never say never this MMA game is virtually unpredictable but I have to side with the Champion in this one. We also do not know whether or not this a five round fight or a three fight but in either case I lean towards the Champion.

Outcome: Cormier by decision
