The Jacksonville Jaguars have drafted University of Florida’s Dante Fowler Jr. The University of Florida product has risen draft boards over the past three months, going from a fringe first-round prospect in my eyes, to a top three overall selection. No doubt, Fowler can rush the passer, and head coach Gus Bradley loves those types of  players in his defense, but a better prospect was available: Leonard Williams from USC.

Both of their NFL Draft profiles are here:

Dante Fowler Jr.

Leonard Williams

Fowler is considered the better pass-rusher, but Williams can play every position on the defensive line and in both systems 3-4 or 4-3. His versatility is unmatched in this draft, and he is the most NFL ready player in the entire draft class. That is why I am surprised GM David Caldwell did not call Williams’ name.

The Jaguars defense will be improved with either player, and Fowler will wreak havoc against the quarterbacks in the ultra-competitive AFC South like Andrew Luck. It is hard to grade draft until years down the road, but the Jaguars will regret this pick when both Fowler’s and Williams careers are over.

Draft Grade: B+
