The Man of Steel is coming to CW’s Supergirl and why it’s a good thing
With the announcement earlier last month that “Supergirl” would be leaving CBS and joining her fellow DC Comics counterparts on The CW due to ratings and budget, many fans speculated what this would mean for crossover events. Well forget crossover events, news broke yesterday that the Man of Steel himself would be appearing in at least the first two episodes of season 2. Supergirl has already seen the Flash join her in National City and now she will be teaming up with her cousin, Superman. Supergirl ended with a cliffhanger of sorts as -SPOILER ALERT- a mysterious pod crashed to Earth and when it opened, Supergirl seemed to recognize the occupant. No details have emerged if this will have anything to do with Superman being visible in the show or not. During season one there were CGI shots of Superman from time to time and even text between Clark and Kara but we never actually saw Clark/Superman. No names have emerged as candidates but casting is ongoing at this time.
When news broke yesterday there were many who jumped on the ‘bring back Tom Welling hype train’ -myself included. Welling played Clark Kent/Superman/Bizarro on Smallville for ten seasons. When WB/DC announced a Superman reboot, Welling was the fan favorite but was never really considered and Brandon Routh ended up getting the role in Superman Returns. Welling was asked about coming back to Supergirl and had said this “There are people who would like it. There are people who don’t like it, but I will tell you that no one has ever asked me to do it. So, I don’t know. It would be kind of odd. I don’t know who he is at that point.” WB/DC have always seemed to want to keep the TV-verse separate from the movie-verse and that is a good thing if you ask me.
Also with this announcement came many negative comments about how this is not good to cast a new Superman since we already have one in the DCEU with Henry Cavill (Man of Steel, BVS). I will once again point out that this is nothing new with WB since they did this already with Welling and Routh. Some people commented that the general audience will get confused easily and not understand why there are two different Superman characters. I have complete respect for the general audience and think they can handle multiple characters. We already have two Flash characters, Ezra Miller (Flash-DCEU) and Grant Gustin (Flash-CW). Other than a few people being salty about Gustin not getting the nod, most understand and have accepted it. This multiple characters scenario is very DC Multi-Verse and is nothing new to most comic fans. The news stated that Superman was only going to be in 2 episodes so this might not even become a huge involvement. The show does need to focus on Kara/Supergirl and not Superman.
If the actor who is cast as Superman is a hit with fans then this could lead to him appearing on other shows such as Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow. Who knows we might even finally get that sequel to Smallville and see a TV version of Superman get his own show. I think having a Superman outside the DCEU is a great thing. There are many who do not care for Snyder’s Superman and would like to see a more Reeve like Superman come back. I for one think Henry Cavill is Superman and has done a fabulous job but I am not against seeing another Superman. I have always been a Superman fan and I think the more exposure he gets the better.
I truly feel like in the end this can be a huge ratings boost for Supergirl, it can also create many different roads for the other shows and even potentially open the door for a Superman show. SyFy is currently working on a Krypton show as well. I also like having the DCEU not involved with the TV shows. The tone of the DCEU is just not on the same level as the TV shows. The Superman and Batman of the DCEU would eat Grant Gustin and Stephen Amell alive. But that is just my opinion.
How do you feel about Superman joining Supergirl? Are you someone who is opposed to having the DCEU separate from the TV-Verse? Would you bring back Welling if he wanted to or would you cast someone else? As always continue to follow MFST for all your DC/Marvel news!
