‘The Originals’ Review: “We Have Not Long To Love”
This week on The Originals, the Mikaelson family dealt with the aftermath of Hope taking on the darkness to reunite her family while the rest of the French Quarter dealt with Emmett and his group of vampire purist. Here’s a quick recap of what went down.
Tensions between Hope and Elijah came to a head when the teen went to see Declan (who had returned from Ireland) at Rosseaus only to see Elijah there as well. Unable to control her anger and feeding on the darkness and its urge for violence, Hope used her magic to knock Declan out to hide their secret before using her powers to cut Elijah over and over again. She even brought her father to his knees when he came upon the scene.
None of them expected Declan to witness her attack. After already spending the day talking to Declan about Hayley, Elijah took it upon himself to tell him the truth about the supernatural world before compelling him to forget.
Elsewhere, Marcel and Josh paid Emmett and his bigoted friends a visit after they put up flyers threatening violence if wolves didn’t stay in the bayou. Despite threats, the group refused to back down. That night they had a compelled human deliver a bomb to Lisina, who was determined to stand up for wolves. It killed her and three others while Freya and Keelin were able to escape with a few cuts and bruises.
After being threatened by Emmett earlier, Vincent decided to march with the vampires who were against purists and the wolves who were in mourning. Instead of appearing in person, Emmett and his vamps appeared via astral projection while they were really poisoning the ritual drink Ivy and other witches drank in their prayers. Vincent rushed to the cemetery but was too late. Ivy died in his arms.
Review of this week’s episode of The Originals
Hope is losing control just like everyone expected and the writers killed off two reoccurring women of color, so no surprises this week really on The Originals. I wouldn’t be surprised if Elijah’s compulsion of Declan didn’t work either. The writers tried to add a bright spot by having Freya and Keelin get engaged, but all I can do is worry that one of them is going to die. That’s the trend with married couples in this series besides Davina and Kol who are off living life off-screen.
A glaring plot hole is Marcel not using his strength to simply end Emmett and his followers. It’s meant to make the plot last, but it’s all I could think about, especially after Lisina and Ivy needlessly die. How many people can Vincent lose before he loses hope? As for Elijah, I didn’t think he’d approach Hope as soon as he did. You would think someone his age would know better.
Great jobs from the cast on their performances although this week’s writing was disappointing. I’m giving “We Have Not Long to Love” a 7 out of 10. Shoutout to Alexis Louder (Lisina) and Shiva Kalaiselvan (Ivy). I loved those characters this season.
The Originals will go on break until July 11th.
