The Professor Review
Johnny plays Richard Brown an English professor. In the open to the movie Richard is being told his back pain is really stage-4 cancer. If he takes treatment he will have one-year to 16-months to live. Without treatment six months.
The Brown family has a tradition of gathering around the dinner table and telling their secrets. The idea is Richard thinks he will tell his family he’s dying. He doesn’t get to it though, thanks to his wife Veronica (Rosemarie DeWitt) and his daughter’s Olivia (Odessa Young) bombshell they told.
His daughter admits she’s gay. Richard is relieved. Her mother is not accepting and Olivia storms out.
Veronica tells Richard she has been having an affair with the colleges chancellor Henry (Ron Livingston). Apparently Veronica and Richard have not had an intimate relationship in years. Richard begins to insult Henry and Veronica’s sexual relationship. Poking fun at Henry’s third testicle. He holds off telling either of his diagnosis.
Richard Brown becomes a different person after this whirlwind of news.
At school a bird crashes into the classroom window. One student wants him to help it. He tells him he has no idea what to do. Claire the chancellor’s niece receives a call on her cell phone and Brown makes her stand up and answer the call. He begins to weed out students. He tells the unacceptable ones to leave they will get a C grade.
The others are told to pick one book to read for the quarter and then teach a class on it. He then announces he will be going on a drinking binge and asks to students to sell him marijuana.
Richard then gets high with his wife at home and begins breaking their wedding presents. He also informs her he plans on being unfaithful to her.
He tells his best friend Peter (Danny Houston) to get him a sabbatical at the college. He agrees and is heartbroken when Richard tells him the reason why.
Richard asks the students the next day to accompany him to a bar and they can talk and get to know each other better while imbibing. He hooks up with the waitress, shocking the students.
On his way home with his dog on his lap he spies his wife and the chancellor hooking up at a motel. He pulls in and leaves a handwritten note on her windshield about his affair. A male student who makes him marijuana-laced brownies asks to give him a blowjob. Richard consents.
His friend Peter begs him to go to a cancer support group, he balks but attends anyway only to leave to get drunk. He tells Peter he is leaving and not telling his family so his beloved Olivia does not to see him die.
Richard finally threatens to expose the chancellor’s affair with his wife if he’s not given a sabbatical. The chancellor backed into a corner has to agree.
Richard gets weaker and the cancer spreads faster each day. Peter finds him crumbled onto his office’s floor. He is hallucinating, he hears angels and asks to go to the chapel. While there they contemplate, pray and converse for a miracle that doesn’t happen.
At a dinner party Richard publicly kisses Henry’s wife. Henry decides to force Richard to sit somewhere away from Veronica . When the dine he gets to be too much and Richard proposes a toast. He humiliates Henry exposing his affair with Veronica. He praises Peter and Veronica and then says his final good bye to his colleagues and exposing his diagnosis.
The movie was funny at times and I had to cry when I saw Depp finally succumbing to the disease (My dad passed away from lung cancer). The movie is supposed to released nationwide soon.
Depp is currently touring with his band, Hollywood Vampires. Their new album Rise drops June 21. Two singles have already been released.
