the space between us

The Space Between Us tells the futuristic story of 16-year-old Gardner Elliot, the first human being born on Mars who yearns to see planet Earth. The story starts with his mother, Sarah Eliot, an astronaut who, along with a team of other astronauts, makes the trip to Mars to essentially live there for a few months. However, 2 months into the trip, she discovers she’s pregnant and her and the team of astronauts, scientists, publicists and doctors have to assess the situation and ultimately decide to keep her on Mars and have her deliver her baby on Mars. Then comes the birth of the child who ultimately kills Sarah not long after the delivery, leaving a small boy and a public NASA scandal waiting to happen.

Except it doesn’t happen because of Shepard, the scientist and inventor in charge of the project on Mars, who decides it’s best to keep the boy on Mars as well as keep the public in the dark. 16 years pass and the boy has grown up and has been living quite successfully on the planet of Mars alongside scientists, making him a sort of boy genius. As fantastical as it seems to live on Mars in our eyes, Gardner longs to travel to Earth, to learn more about his parents, to find his father, and meet the girl he’s been chatting with online through bypassing security precautions.

Eventually, he makes it to Earth with the help of his unofficial adoptive mother, Kendra and the help of scientists and doctors, only to discover, he needs more tests done to ensure that he’ll actually survive on Earth. But due to his desperation and impatience, Gardner sees the extensive testing as a way of the scientists trying to stop him so of course, he escapes. In reality, the scientists find that he needs a heart transplant because, get this, his heart is too big. But being the stubborn teenager that he is, he’s clueless of the severity of his health and aimlessly hitchhikes and busses his way to Tulsa, the girl he’s been talking to online. How he got there so fast is somewhat unrealistic but it is a movie with time constrictions, so I’ll forgive them for that and just deem it as “movie magic”.

As we can all assume, Gardner and Tulsa fall in love, he gets his first kiss and first everything romantically speaking with Tulsa, a very sweet first love storyline of the film. The other part being Gardner’s persevering search for his father which he gets from an old file on his mother. I won’t spoil the ending for anyone watching but let’s just say this storyline has an interesting twist at the end. But overall, the story is a sweet innocent story about a curious boy who wants to find his father and falls in love along the way. The futuristic technology is pretty great too. All in all, I’d recommend this film to anyone who loves a coming-of-age film in the mix of a movie about space.
