There is no offseason

“There are only two seasons – winter and baseball.” -Bill Veeck

For the longest time I felt this way about baseball: there was baseball, then there was winter. I was wrong. Four years ago I subscribed to the MLB Network and I learned something new about baseball…

There is no offseason.

There is no winter.

Being able to watch televised coverage of the Winter Meetings and the GM meetings gave me new eyes to the age-old behind-the-scenes strategic aspect of the game we love. During winter, baseball may not be played on fields of green between white lines and yellow poles, but it is still being played out in hotel conference rooms, analytic spreadsheets, phone calls, trade deals and free agent contracts.

The same is true of fantasy baseball. The game goes on though the Chicago Cubs have been crowned as champions. If you want to be competitive in the year to come, you cannot hibernate with the bears. You cannot winter the doldrums.

There is no offseason.

There is no winter.

Just more (fantasy) baseball!

I cannot guarantee success by having you pay attention to the offseason of baseball (and no fantasy writer should ever guarantee success), but you do always want to set yourself up as best as possible to succeed. And I’m here to help.

Between now and Opening Day, that sacred New Year’s Day of baseball, I will cover all the bases of the offseason that you need to consider if you want to optimize your chances of success in 2017. Here are the topics I will cover in my “There is No Offseason” series:

-Free Agent Signings

-Trades

-How to make good fantasy trades during the offseason

-Evaluating prospects

-Choosing keepers

-Being a good commissioner

-Position by position ranks and comparisons

-How to interpret Spring Training numbers (hint: don’t.)

-Draft preparation

-Who knows what else!

If you have specific topics or questions you’d like to see covered, let me know on Twitter @coolpapaphil or email at mfstphil@gmail.com

In the meantime, do not fall asleep. Baseball has not ended. Baseball has just begun.
