Thirteen Reasons Why Review
Based on the novel by Jay Asher, newly-released mini-series, Thirteen Reasons Why is about the life of Hannah Baker and the tapes she left behind after she commits suicide. We follow Clay Jensen, Hannah’s friend and coworker, as he listens to the tapes for the first time, bit by bit as it reveals another piece of the story. The show weaves through time, from before and after Hannah Baker’s death, taking us back into time, making it seem as though she’s still alive even after she’s gone.
The success that comes along with the show is due to the slow crescendo of mystery, the revealing depiction of someone becoming depressed, and the universal feeling of being a bullied and feeling alone. The series may be about teenagers and teenage angst in high school but it’s a story for anyone and everyone. We watch Hannah’s parents in all of their confusion and frustration in wondering why Hannah took her own life and frustrated that they didn’t see the signs.
Each episode chronicles one person out of thirteen people, one reason for why Hannah did what she did. The show follows a certain structure all while exploring each person’s unique story and how it related to Hannah’s story. By the seventh episode, Clay slowly starts to lose his mind, as he becomes angry, terrified and confused at himself and at the world. We discover just how unfair the world can be, how terrible people can get away with just about anything, and how something so small could somehow turn into a tragedy.
