Analysis: TJ Hockenson is rising draft boards faster than any prospect at this point in the offseason. Some of that is justified, but there is a growing belief that Hockenson will become the games best tight end in the next three years. For those believing that, I will say, “slow your role”. Hockenson is the drafts best tight end, but he has a lot of growth potential in his game before he is labeled as the NFL’s best. He is an uber-athletic receiver who has a high football IQ that is evident in his play. He has the agility in his routes to fake safeties and his hands are sticky. When he gets his hands on you as a blocker, he is locked on. Can make the difficult catches look easy. At 250-pounds, he needs more muscle on his frame—if he stays where he is at he will get big-boyed at the next level. When asked to work up to the second level with his blocks he whiffs and misses more than a batter facing Randy Johnson. Comes in way too high. But his initial blocking is elite for the position. He will need to get with his position coach in the NFL and go over how to beat zone coverage–he lacks the ability to find the soft spots in zone coverage. But that is fixable. He should and will be the first tight end off the board this April–but don’t anoint him a Top 3 tight end in the league, just yet.
