Hometown hero Todd Frazier wowed the fans as he won the Home Run Derby by defeating Joc Pederson in the final round. In the process he became the first player to win the derby in his home ball park since Ryan Sandberg 25 years ago.

This year, MLB made changes to make the derby quicker and more popular and the changes did not disappoint. The new format was set up in a bracket style with the players being seeded by their home run totals. There was a possibility for rain in the area so the new rule changes had to be adjusted. In each round, the player was given four minutes to hit as many home runs as he could. After the time expired, the player would get an additional 30 seconds if he hit two or more home runs over 425 feet. In addition to those changes, each player would get a 45 second timeout that he could use during their each round. Although these rules may seem complicated, the hope was that the new format would be more exciting than the old rules which were based on hitting home runs until a certain number of outs were recorded.

Frazier had to really bring it to advance to the semifinals as his opponent, Prince Fielder, hit 13 home runs in the first round. Frazier needed to hit 14 to advance and, because of the new format, the player only had to eclipse the total of his opponent rather than continue to hit. The crowd was behind Frazier from the start as each home run brought a roar from the crowd that emulated a player hitting a walk off home run.

The Home Run Derby needed a new format to get more excitement back into the event and these new rules did exactly that. This year’s event also had a nice showing of veteran power hitters, like Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder, going up against the next wave of sluggers, Kris Bryant and Joc Pederson. This year’s Home Run Derby had everything, from the excitement of a new format to a hometown talent taking home the hardware. The derby did not disappoint and now we get ready for what should be another great night at the ballpark tomorrow with the All-Star Game.
