Tony Adams Draft Profile

Tony Adams draft profile

Strengths:

  • Powerful lower half
  • Leader of a well-schooled offensive line
  • Solid initial quickness
  • Consistent finding his block and makes adjustment to find work if needed
  • Understands zone blocking scheme
  • Plus body control
  • Pass sets are balanced with punch-read hands
  • Has worked at center
  • Penalized just twice over last two seasons

Analysis: Tony Adams is a three-year starter who lacks length, but carries a powerful, compact frame. Adams plays with plus balance and body control and it’s rare to see him fall off of blocks. As a youth tennis player until the age of 15, Adams has developed above average footwork for a big and has the play traits to fit into any run scheme. His lack of length will concern some teams, but he’s talented enough to become a solid NFL starter fairly early in his career. He was the captain of a very good offensive line at NC State and looked upon as a leader on and off the field. His technique is solid despite his physical limitations. He is versatile starting over 10 games at center as well as his usual guard spot. Rarely penalized throughout his career.

Weaknesses:

  • Not as tall and long as you want at guard
  • Gives ground to bull-rushers who beat him with early punch
  • Just average in lateral recovery in pass pro
  • Can improve hand usage
  • Long-levered rushers can gain access to his edge
  • Finishing will improve if he learns to re-leverage hands after initial contact

Analysis: Tony Adams has his physical limitations that will ultimately hurt his draft stock, but he is a hard worker with sound technique. He has an average first step and his lateral quickness is not considered elite. Pass rushers with a quick first step and long arms have beaten Adams often on tape, specifically to his outside. His hand usage is there, but after he is re-leveraged he misses his hand placement allowing defenders to beat hims with solid counter moves.
