Top 10 Songs of 2017
As summer burns on, music is playing everywhere from the beaches to headphones in office cubicles. 2017 has been a year of great music. Bands and artists have returned from hiatuses with new albums, visuals, and tours. As the summer months mark the beginning of the back half of the year, it’s a good time to look back at what the year has given us.
This list isn’t just based on what’s getting the most plays on the radio but also streaming and the quality of the music. Of course, this list may be biased based on my music taste. If your top picks aren’t included, comment them below. I’m always open to music recommendations. Here are the top ten songs of 2017 so far.
10. “The Cure” by Lady Gaga
Gaga returned with new solo music last year after some time away focusing acting on American Horror Story and her collaboration with Tony Bennett. After the release of Joanne last year, Gaga released “The Cure” back in April. The song feels like a mash up of Joanne‘s ballads and Gaga’s older pop sound.
9. “Something Just Like This” by The Chainsmokers featuring Coldplay
In February, Coldplay teamed up with the EDM pair to drop this new single that was featured on both Coldplay and The Chainsmokers’ albums. The song has spent a good amount of time on top of the charts and has sold 988,000 copies in the U.S. as of July. I will admit I’m not a big Chainsmokers fan, but Chris Martin pulled me in.
8. “Slide” by Calvin Harris featuring Frank Ocean and Migos
On the heels of Frank Ocean’s new album Blonde and the Migos’ hit “Bad and Boujee”, “Slide” is the perfect song for the summer even though it was released in February. The song has since gone platinum with over 1,000,000 sales and streams.
7. “Told You So” by Paramore
The song off of Paramore fifth studio album After Laughter hasn’t gotten a ton of radio play on the mainstream radio, but it’s still a great song. Check it out below.
6.“Passionfruit” by Drake
The song, which is labeled as dancehall, R&B, and pop, continues Drake’s singing/rapping style. It makes you feel like laying out in the sun. “Passionfruit” made it to the top ten on several charts and number one on the U.S. and U.K. Rhythmic and R&B charts.
5.”Stay” by Zedd feating Alessia Cara
The collaboration between the young singer and producer resulted in the third top ten song for both artists. The song is platinum in the U.S. and gold in the U.K. You listen to any top 40 stations you know this song is one of the most played songs of 2017.
4.“Shining” by DJ Khaled featuring Beyonce and Jay-Z
Outside of the Rhythmic and R&B/Hip Hop charts, the single from Khaled’s tenth album didn’t chart exceptionally high overall, but it did hit Gold certification. It’s a fun song to sing along to and has an uplifting vibe to it.
The Compton rapper dropped his new album DAMN in April to much critical success. “HUMBLE.” peaked at number one on the Hot 100 chart, making it Lamar’s first and highest-charting single. The music video is pretty cool with great visual shots. It was directed by Dave Meyers. “HUMBLE.” is one of Hip-Hop’s most talked about songs of 2017.
2.”Despacito” by Luis Fonsi featuring Justin Bieber and Daddy Yankee
The original version of the song is great on its own, but Luis Fonsi pretty much guaranteed that the song would rocket up the charts by featuring Bieber on the remix. The song debuted at number two on the Hot Latin Song chart, before hitting number one and staying there for twenty-three weeks. The remix hit number one on the Hot 100 chart, making it Fonsi and Yankee’s first number one, and Bieber’s fifth.
1.”Shape of You” by Ed Sheeran
Sheeran returned this year with an album after taking a break and it doesn’t even feel like he ever left. “Shape of You” has hit multiple platinum statuses in several countries including 5x platinum in the U.S. and 4x platinum in the U.K. The single from ÷ (Divide) reached number one in thirty countries. I’ve always been a fan of Sheeran’s more upbeat songs as his slow songs either make me cry or feel like planning a wedding.
