Top 5 must see movies for the Fall/Winter 2016
Well movie-goers it’s that time of the year. Summer is winding down and we have had some good movies (Batman v Superman, Captain America:Civil War, Jungle Book, Suicide Squad) this year to keep us entertained. But now it is time for cooler weather, shorter days, and of course excellent cinema! I wanted to share with you my TOP 5 must see movies for the Fall/Winter 2016.
#5 Birth of a Nation – October 7th, 2016 (Nate Parker, Armie Hammer)
Synopsis : “Nat Turner, as a child, is taught to read so he can study the Bible, and be a preacher to fellow slaves. When Turner’s master takes him across the country on a preaching tour to profit from his preaching, Turner begins to see the scope of slavery, and decides to become a different leader”
Why do I think this is a must see movie? Well for starters it has a pretty decent cast led and directed by Nate Parker. It also stars Armie Hammer (Man from U.N.C.L.E), Jackie Earle Haley (Watchmen), and Penelope Ann Miller. The film should be a shoe in for Oscar contention and it’s already seen lots of praise when it was screened for the 2016 Sundance Festival, drawing the biggest standing ovation. The film will no doubt have some controversy as 2016 has seen its fair share of race relation issues, but I think the film will deliver and should be on your list of films to see this fall.
#4 Arrival – November 11th, 2016 (Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner)
Synopsis: “When alien crafts land across the world, a linguist expert (Amy Adams) is recruited by the military to determine whether they come in peace or are a threat.”
Who doesn’t love a good Sci-Fi alien flick? This film also boasts a very talented cast led by Amy Adams (Man of Steel), Jeremy Renner (Avengers), Forest Whitaker (The Butler). Though the film follows the same basic plot of most Alien encounter films where they invade, we panic, Army gets involved, and we go to war, there is still some mystery as to the creatures themselves plus the film I think will hold up well due to the cast. I am hoping that the film has some surprises in store for us and is not the basic Alien Invasion formula.
#3 Doctor Strange – November 4th, 2016 (Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton)
Synopsis: “Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) loses his ability to operate after a terrible accident, but finds new purpose when a mystical being known as the Ancient One reveals that Dr. Strange is the newly designated Sorcerer Supreme.”
Lets face it there is no need to even tell you why you should see this. It is Marvel, its Doctor Strange, and it is Benedict Cumberbatch. The film does also boast an amazing cast rounded out by Tilda Swinton (Narnia), Rachel McAdams (The Notebook), and Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave). This will be Marvel’s first movie with magic and the trailers show what might be a much darker tone that previous Marvel films. The film also seems to borrow heavily from Inception. The film should be another hit for Marvel as they head into 2017.
#2 Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them – November 18th, 2016 (Eddie Redmayne, Ezra Miller)
Synopsis: “A magizoologist (Eddie Redmayne) makes a brief stop in 1926 New York but is waylaid by a Muggle, a misplaced magical case and the escape of some fantastic beasts.”
Ever since Harry Potter ended in 2011, fans and movie-goers have been hoping and praying that we would see the World of Harry Potter return to the big screen. Well fans in 2016 we are getting our wish. I feel there can never be enough Harry Potter. I am one who hopes they turn the Cursed Child into a full length film someday. The film will bring many of us back to Hogwarts before the days of Harry, Ron, and Hermione. We have a wonderful cast of new characters led by Eddie Redmayne (Newt Scamander), Ezra Miller (Credence), and Colin Farell (Percival Graves). This film I think will be one of the highest grossing films of the year and if you loved Harry Potter then this is a must see.
#1 Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – December 16th, 2016 (Felicity Jones, Forest Whitaker)
Synopsis: “Resistance fighters (Felicity Jones, Diego Luna) embark on a daring mission to steal the Empire’s plans for the Death Star.”
Hmmm…! Now why on earth would any one want to see this film? Oh that is right..IT IS FREAKING STAR WARS!!! Also if that was not enough to entice you to go see this film then maybe the fact that one of the most popular villains in all of cinema will be making his return to the big screen. Who? Let me tell you who, DARTH VADER. That alone is enough incentive to go and see this movie. Once again I think Star Wars will own December and you might be looking at the biggest film of 2016.
I hope you enjoyed my list and I know there are many more films to see this fall but please at least check out the 5 I listed here if you get a chance.
