Top 5 Stories from Premier League Matchweek 1
The 2018-2019 Premier League season is underway! MFST is back with the Top 5 series as we work from Matchweek 1 to Matchweek 38. Here are the top stories from the weekend.
1. Man City spoil Emery’s debut with Arsenal
In what was an abysmal weekend for the Gunners’ fan base, Arsenal lost 2-0 to the defending Premier League champions. New Arsenal head coach Unai Emery rolled out an unusual side that omitted new signing Lucas Torreria from the starting lineup along with striker Alexandre Lacazette. Some youth players were included in the starting lineup where Emery looked to see effective speed from them but the team simply couldn’t slow down their opponents. City’s Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva scored for the winners.
2. Liverpool beat West Ham 4-0
Liverpool are picking up right where they left off. A strong run in both the Premier League and Champions League, the club started their campaign with their 500th win in the PL. Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, and Daniel Sturridge all scored goals, Mane provided the brace. Concerns in the beginning of the year were that Salah wasn’t going to be able to continue his run of form from last season, but being he was the first to score for the club this season, he’s proving he’s still capable of being a starting choice for manager Jurgen Klopp.
3. Match of the Week: Wolves and Everton
This year, the Top 5 Stories will now include a Match of the Week in the lineup and this match goes to the Wolves and Everton. The 2-2 draw was a thrilling competition that showed off to Everton’s new signing Richarlison with a brace for the Toffees. Newly promoted Wolverhampton made sure they stayed strong scoring the final equalizing goal in the 80th minute. There was a controversial call in the 40th minute when Everton’s Phil Jagielka was sent off for a tackle some deemed only a yellow card and final warning.
4. Chelsea beat Huddersfield 3-0
Marizio Sarri’s first PL game as Chelsea manager saw him get his first win of the season. N’Golo Kante, new signing Jorginio, and Pedro scored the three goals for Chelsea. Despite good attempted shots from Huddersfield, the team couldn’t over come the Blues.
5. Man United beat Leicester 2-1
United got the first game of the entire Premier League season televised on Friday at Old Trafford. They did not disappoint the fans as they scored in the 3rd minute from a Paul Pogba penalty. They wouldn’t score again till Luke Shaw got his first Manchester United goal since joining in 2014. Leicester’s Jamie Vardy got a late goal to try and make an attempt to draw the match but the Foxes came up short. It showed despite making signings to replace him, Leicester were missing Riyad Mahrez.
Matchweek 2 begins this upcoming weekend.
