Top 5 Stories from Premier League Matchweek 20
It’s a hot week in the Premier League, so let’s go through the top stories from the midweek action.
1. Harry Kane best Premier League scorer all-time in calendar year
Harry Kane’s back to back hat trick performances are brilliant. The Spurs put on a 5-2 thumping against Southampton, in which Kane passed Alan Shearer as the best all time in scoring in a calendar year. An interesting stat that’s been passed around is that Kane has done something that not even Lionel Messi, one of the best if not the best player in the world, has ever done. The Spurs remain 5th while the Saints drop to 14th.
2. Liverpool destroy Swansea 5-0
It was a home performance that was lackluster in the first half. Philippe Coutinho scored early to make it 1-0, remaining that way till half time. The second half gave the fans what they wanted as Liverpool poured it on for a much-needed and convincing victory. Liverpool remain 4th and Swansea remain 20th.
3. Lingard’s late brace saves point for Man United
It was one of the most disappointing performances by the Red Devils this season despite the draw. Burnley outmatched them the whole way. There was great anticipation of the United lineup including Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but it was upsettingly ineffective. United remain 2nd and Burnley remain 7th.
4. Newcastle scare Man City despite 1-0 loss
City didn’t look very invincible during this match. Going on the road to St. James Park, City got their only goal in the 31st minute from Raheem Sterling. For the remainder of the match, Newcastle knocked on City’s door with relentless counter attacks and defense shattering passes that put City on the backfoot for the remainder of the game. City still sit atop the table while Newcastle remain 15th.
5. Arsenal holds off Crystal Palace for 3-2 victory
Alexis Sanchez scored a quick brace in the 62nd and 66th minute to help Arsenal to its 3 goals. Crystal Palace scored late in the 89th minute to make it 3-2, where Arsenal showed very suspect defense in the late stages. Nevertheless, the win was saved and Arsenal find themselves 6th, while Crystal Palace sit 16th.
Matchweek 21 and Matchweek 22 will run back to back from this Saturday all the way to Thursday January 4th.
