Premier LeagueHere are the top stories from the 5th week of Premier League action.

1. Wayne Rooney’s return to Old Trafford mired in 4-0 defeat to Manchester United

Rooney couldn’t net a goal but contributed well throughout the match. Everton were down 1-0 for most of the game, and then once Rooney came off, Manchester United opened the flood gates. Goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Romelu Lukaku, and Anthony Martial in the final ten minutes sealed the deal in resounding fashion.

2. Manchester City destroy Watford 6-0

Now sitting on top of the table with Manchester United, Manchester City have emerged as a team on the pace for a PL title. Sergio Augero scored a hat trick, and goals from Gabriel Jesus, Nicolas Otamendi, and Raheem Sterling brought Watford back to Earth from their spot previously being 4th in the table, now 11th.

3. London Derby ends in goalless draw

Non-excitement in what is usually a highlighted fixture in the Premier League. With Chelsea mounting a title defense and Arsenal trying to pull themselves out of a performance rut, a draw was the last result both teams needed.

4. AFC Bournemouth get first win, Crystal Palace remain winless

Bournemouth managed to secure a 2-1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion on Friday. The team currently sits in 19th in the Premier League standings. Crystal Palace lost 1-0 to Southampton coming off the firing of their manager earlier. Palace are on pace to be relegated this year if they can’t string together at the minimum draws to separate themselves from the bottom.

5. Newcastle United in 4th after 2-1 win over Stoke City

It may only last for the week, but if teams like Newcastle and Huddersfield Town, who were newly promoted can spoil games at the top, it leaves the Premier League wide open below the Top 4.
