Tourney Preview: #11 Michigan vs #11 Tulsa

Tourney Preview

Alright fans, let’s be honest for a minute.  Set your emotions aside.  I know, I know.  You can’t.  This is sports.  People are more heavily invested in these teams than they are in their jobs.  But, do either of these teams deserve to be here?  Honestly?

Let’s face it, the answer is probably not.  Michigan made a hell of a run in the Big Ten tourney to get to this point, upsetting regular season champs Indiana along the way.  They are probably the team that you could say had the strongest case to be here.  Tulsa lost twice to Memphis, a non-tournament team, by a combined 32 points in the last three games they have played.  That isn’t exactly closing the season strong.  Now, the teams do have similar RPI’s, 57 and 58 respectively.  Michigan has played a stronger schedule however, ranked 45th compared to Tulsa’s 64th.

This game will be decided at the 3 point line.  Michigan is one of the strongest 3 point shooting teams in the country, hitting over 38% of their 3 point attempts.  Tulsa has struggled on both ends of the floor at the arc, something the Wolverines must take advantage of if they want to survive.  Neither team is very strong on the boards, expect the team to control the glass to control the game as well.  If either team struggles with creating offense, getting second and third opportunities will play big in getting buckets.

That is all this is Wolverine’s fans: Survive and advance.  If Michigan can make it past Tulsa Wednesday Night, Notre Dame awaits Friday night.  Don’t look past the Golden Hurricane though.  They are being slammed across the country for being included in the bracket.  Don’t think the players don’t hear the noise and don’t want to show the media they belong.  Expect both teams to lay it all on the floor.  I believe that Michigan will make it past the Golden Hurricane, but it will not be a cakewalk.   It will get fiesty, and while these teams are pretty well-disciplined, it could get a little chippy down low.  My prediction UM 65 – Tulsa 62.
