UAB vs Buffalo Preview

UAB vs Buffalo

The UAB Blazers and Buffalo Bulls will face off in the Cayman Islands Classic at John Gray Gymnasium this Tuesday night.

UAB is coming off a disastrous upset loss at the hands of the Richmond Spiders last night 63-50, a game in which they trailed the entire time, sometimes by as much as 20 points. Richmond, is not a good team this season–before picking up their first win over UAB, the Spiders lost to Jacksonville State by 32 and Delaware by 13.

UAB shot just 33.3% from the field and 17.4% (4-for-23) from beyond the arc in the loss. Leading the way for the Blazers was Chris Cokley who had 8 points, 10 rebounds, and a block.

Prior to their game against Richmond, UAB was averaging 88.7 ppg on 50.8% shooting from the field. The Blazers were averaging 7.3 three-pointers per game on 34.4% shooting from beyond the arc. Offensively, UAB has been led by Chris Cokley (19.0 ppg, 11.7 rpg, 2.7 apg, 1.0 spg), Zack Bryant (16.3 ppg, 2.7 rpg,, 4.7 apg), Jalen Perry (12.3 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 1.7 apg, 1.3 spg), and William Lee (11.0 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 1.0 apg, 2.0 bpg). Defensively, UAB was holding their opponents to an average of 57.0 ppg on 36.7% shooting from the field. The Blazers had a rebound margin of 17.3 and a turnover margin of 3.0.

Those numbers obviously took a dip after yesterday’s game. With players like Cokley, NBA hopeful William Lee and Nick Norton, this Blazers team is talented, but they need to come ready to play or a repeat performance against Richmond is in store.

Buffalo, the preseason MAC-favorite, gave everything they had to the 12th-ranked Cincinnati Bearcats last night, losing 73-67. They fought hard, especially in the second half, outscoring the Bearcats by seven. If it wasn’t for a 39-26 halftime lead, Cincinnati may not have won this game.

We previewed the matchup yesterday and told you to take the +16 points Vegas was giving the Bulls.

Leading the way for the Bulls against the Bearcats was CJ Massinburg who had a double-double with 29 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.

Forward Nick Perkins is another guy to watch on Buffalo–he is a walking double-double and can drop 30 points at anytime. He is averaging over 23 points per game.

Prediction

Before yesterday’s game, I liked what I saw out of the Blazers early on in the season–but yesterday was a complete dud. If they come out cold, expect Buffalo to take advantage and put this game away in the first half, just like Richmond did. With the line currently at -1.5 for Buffalo, I think they easily cover the points and win the game by close to double-digits.
