UAB vs Florida State Preview and Prediction
UAB vs Florida State Preview
In what is the final matchup of the opening set of games in the 2018 AdvoCare Invitational, an underrated UAB squad will look to upset 14th-ranked Florida State.
Both teams come into the contest undefeated at 3-0, although the Blazers schedule is yet to feature a team anywhere near the Seminoles caliber.
UAB features four players who average double-figures in scoring—but it is their backcourt of sophomore Zack Bryant and senior Jalen Perry that make the team go.
Bryant and Perry both play 30 minutes a night and this Blazers team has depth—nine players average at least ten minutes per game.
Florida State isn’t known as a high-tempo squad, but will constantly need fresh legs if they are going to keep up with UAB’s rotation.
Florida State plays some of the best team basketball I have seen, at least early in the season like this.
I highlighted FSU’s best players in a piece to get you ready for the AdvoCare Invitational and it highlights Terance Mann and Trent Forrest.
You can check out that piece, but another Seminole that is crucial to the team’s success is PJ Savoy…
The FSU senior has finally received a healthy dose of playing time this season—averaging 26 minutes a night. In his previous two seasons he never averaged more than 13 minutes per game, always just outside Leonard Hamilton’s consistent rotation of players.
Not this year.
Savoy has become a sharpshooter for the Noles. He’s averaging 12 points and is extremely efficient, shooting 53 percent from the field and 53 percent from three-point land.
Teams will need to focus on Savoy in order to slow him down, or prevent him from taking open looks.
The UAB guards will be tasked with that job—-not easy, just ask Canisius.
If you saw my full AdvoCare Invitational predictions, you know I think very highly of FSU—you’ll need to read the article to find out what exactly I mean.
The Blazers will present a challenge to FSU, but it won’t be enough to earn a resume-boosting win in the opening round.
