UFC Fight Night Croatia: What We Learned
UFC had a pretty good card for Fight Night in Croatia, we got to see some knockouts, good decision victories and even a wardrobe malfunction?! Here’s what we learned from UFC Fight Night Croatia.
- Big Ben Rothwell is not ready for a title shot.
He was on a pretty impressive 4 fight win streak, including the only submission victory against Josh Barnett. His herky jerk awkward style wasn’t enough to beat Dos Santos, on top of that he looked slow even for a Heavyweight. He needs to work on his offense when he pushes his opponent against the cage. He had Dos Santos against the fence a couple of time but did nothing. He really needs to be a bit more aggressive.
- Junior Dos Santos can learn.
On the other end Dos Santos had a perfect fight. He stayed disciplined, pumped his stiff jab out there and circled the cage expertly. Dos Santos has been criticized for being overly aggressive and throwing too many single punches. His power made him stray away from his technically sound boxing. In this fight he really worked the body, used his jabs to set up power punched and man did he look better than he has in a while. Dos Santos used to have some pretty bad movement, specifically he would let himself get pushed up against the fence before he began moving laterally. In this fight his positional awareness was top notch, he circled away from the cage and then used that new angle to pop a jab on Rothwell. He landed heavy but didn’t let that change his game plan. Could we see this new version of Dos Santos make a run at the title?
- Derrick Lewis has heavy hands and a sense of humor.
This one is simple Derrick Lewis has the type of power that makes heavyweight fights a “don’t blink or you’ll miss it” division. Once he trapped Gonzaga against the cage he just poured on some brutal punches and KO’d his opponent. In the post fight interview he poked some fun at a previous fighters faux pas. Lewis looks like a good dude, and he’s already called out Roy Nelson in what is sure to be an awesome newt fight.
- Gabriel Gonzaga needs to retire.
He’s 36 years old, and 9 of his 11 losses have come by way of knock-out. He has nothing left to prove, one of the most historic KO victories ever and is just going to get himself hurt now. With a all the recent discoveries of CTE and other brain related injuries Gonzaga needs to hang them up and focus on teaching.
- No Sports Bra can Handle that type of punishment.
People have been trashing the UFC Reebok deal since its inception, with good reason, but this is not one of those moments. Some fans have started saying that the women’s clothing is not as secure and looking for quotes from other female fighters about their discomfort in the Reebok fight gear but this incident has more to do with this, than with shoddy clothing. But perhaps this will help address any issues female fighters have with their fight gear.
