UFC on Fox 20 preview: Holm vs Shevchenko preview
In an action packed month of fights from the UFC, the action continues this Saturday with UFC on Fox 20 headlined by Holly Holm “The Preachers Daughter” vs Valentina Shevchenko. We are one week away from UFC 201 Lawler vs Woodly. UFC 200 was one to forget with the circus that it turned into instead of being this historic event we all thought it would be. The main event was originally supposed to feature a Light Heavyweight bout between Anthony Johnson taking on Glover Texiera but was later postponed to UFC 202. Looking at the card it seems pretty bare, but I’m willing to bet that Holm’s name value alone will be a top draw and will keep the event relevant.
When the fight was announced as the replacement for Johnson and Texiera most fans were left scratching their heads as this fight doesn’t make much sense. Holly Holm is one of the top Bantamweights in the Women’s division today and let’s not forget that she was winning her fight against Miesha Tate at UFC 196, but suffered from a late comeback by Tate and instead of tapping was choked on unconsciously. There’s no reason to not believe that Holm didn’t reserve a rematch against Tate, but now Tate’s out of the question as current champ Amanda Nunes waits for the winner of Holm/Shevchenko.
Holly has nothing to gain, but everything to lose. It’s quite jarring that Shevchenko is already headlining an event owning a 1-1 record in the UFC. She owns a split-decision victory coming in 2015, and her last loss is to current champ Nunes at UFC 196. Still that isn’t a knock to Valentina as she is still a threat to Holm, and can make it an intriguing fight. The way the contenders and title has been floating around, a loss to Shevchenko would throw Holm to the bottom of the line, as Shevchenko would be in the mix up for a fight with Nunes.
In the Co-Main event fans will see a Lightweight bout between Edson Barboza vs Gilbert Milendez who is coming off a suspension for a failed drug-test at UFC 188 and hasn’t won in nearly 3 years. Barboza is one of those guys who has been dripping with potential since stepping foot in the octagon, but has stumbled a bit in his last fights. His recent win was in April over Anthony Pettis. I’ve always enjoyed watching Milendez, but unfortunately he’s been on a decline and Barboza seems to be the more focused fighter coming in.
