uiw vs utsaDon’t let the images of these two teams and their fans uniting for a hometown showdown parade fool you one bit. When you unmask the all the smiling faces here, there’s plenty of tension between these two teams once they step onto the field on Saturday.

The UIW football program has been around longer than the UTSA program, and yet, the majority of the buzz between these two teams goes to UTSA. Even after a horrible outing as a team in 2018, everybody is still talking about UTSA.

The Cardinals were three games better that the Roadrunners last season, finishing with a 6-5 record. As the battle of the birds starts to heat up, you can count on a fun and competitive games as these two teams from San Antonio, will try to kick off the 2019 season with a victory in their back yard.

UIW

The Cardinals will need to be cautious with returning sophomore quarterback, Jon Copeland. After tearing his ACL in their last game on the regular season, Copeland looks to get right back on track to be the guy under center that UIW needs to go to. Not only is his accuracy very good, Copeland does have the speed to throw off opposing defenders.

Ameer King will be the starting running back with Ra’Quanne Dickens no longer there. Dickens was a very productive back in his time with the Cardinals, and King will look to continue the consistency in their running game.

Most notably, UIW will have their entire offensive line this season, and that should give Copeland plenty of time to let his new playmakers at receiver go up and make some plays.

Defensively, UIW will have some big playmakers back on the field from last season, but they need some new faces to quickly step up in order to have a good balance with the offense. Mar’kel Cooks will lead that backfield, as he totaled 75 tackles last season, and it’s going to be fun watching the stud linebacker rack up even more tackles this year.

UTSA

Grabbing a celebrity head coach is exciting news for a city that isn’t recognized for its college football program, but if a repeat of 2018 is on the rise this season, than things will get ugly quickly in the Alamo city.

One player that UTSA fans should ecstatic about is quarterback Frank Harris. Harris is hungry to get back onto the field, but more importantly, he’s healthy. After receiving offers from Baylor, Georgia Tech, and UCF, it was anybody’s guess as to what Harris would’ve done from there. But now that we know that he’s staying, the energy around this team and coaching staff should stay high into the season.

Head coach Frank Wilson does not shy away from letting players continuously battle it out either when it comes to these guys having the opportunity to leap frog over each other. The ‘Bird Cage’ is what Wilson calls it during practice drills, but freshman running back, Sincere McCormick, sprinted away with the opportunity and now finds himself as the starting running back.

Enough about the offense, the defense is a whole other story. Last season UTSA had a pretty strong defensive unit, but none of that mattered when the offense wasn’t able to put up points on the board. This year the defense again, goes into the season looking really good with the starters and backups.

Prediction

Don’t be surprised if the Cardinals come out on top this weekend. That would be a huge marquee victory for UIW, and a victory over the Roadrunners would help creep them out of the shadows of UTSA.

It’s going to be a long four quarters of football with each team going back-and-fourth to one-up each other, but when the clock starts winding down, the speed of McCormick and Harris should be more than enough to help out the defense pull out a hard fought victory.

UTSA 28, UIW 23
