Vermont is nearing the completion of a three-game road trip as they head to Virginia to take George Mason. The Catamounts are 2-0 on the trip with wins over George Washington and Towson.
Ernie Duncan has averaged a team-best 18.0 points per game and has shot 61.5% (8-for-13) from long-range. Anthony Lamb trails with a 14.0 scoring average and has pulled down 7.5 rebounds per game. Isaiah Moll is the third UVM player to post double figures at 12.5. The freshman ranks second on the team behind Duncan with a 50.0% (8-for-16) field goal percentage.
Duncan buried a season-high six three-pointers in Friday night’s 70-64 win a Towson, one shy of his career-high. The redshirt senior has drained at least six long-distance attempts four times during his UVM career. Since 2015-16, the Catamounts are 14-6 when Duncan makes at least four triples.
Lamb will need to be the focus of George Mason if they want to come away with the victory. The 6’6 227lb junior poses a definite mis-match against the Patriots–his combination of size and speed will be difficult to contain.
Vermont was picked to win the America East in the league’s 2018-19 preseason poll. The Catamounts have won 20+ games in 10-straight seasons and 17 of the past 20. The team has posted a 61-17 (.782) overall record dating back to the start of the 2016-17 season, including a stellar 31-1 mark in America East play. The Catamounts won the league’s regular season title in 2018 and qualified for the NIT after falling to UMBC in the America East Championship game. Vermont earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament in 2017.
George Mason is on a two-game winning streak like their opponents as they beat William & Mary and Morgan State in their last two contests.
Senior guard Otis Livingston II posted his second double-double of the season (18 pts, 10 assists) vs. the Tribe. Per Patrick Stevens, he is the first Patriot to have two 10+ assist games in a season since Luke Hancock in 2010-11. Livingston II is averaging 22.0 points over the past three games. He’s posted 17 assists and just three turnovers over the past two.
Outside of Livingston II, the GMU has four players averaging in double figures: Justin Kier (11.3), Jarred Reuter (10.9), Javon Greene (10.9), Jaire Grayer (10.0).
The Patriots are third in the Atlantic 10 in field goal percentage (.474) and 79th nationally in 2-point field goal percentage (.542).
George Mason was selected to finish fourth in this year’s Atlantic 10 Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Patriots have won four of its last six games and lead the A-10 with 667 total points this season.
LINE: -3 Vermont
Despite their similar records, Vermont has looked like the superior team in the early season. The Catamounts played No.2 Kansas tough, matched up very well against Louisville and beat a very good Yale team.
I like Vermont to win and cover.
