Vermont vs Marquette Preview and Prediction
Vermont vs Marquette Preview
In a day filled with great college basketball matchups, this one between Vermont and Marquette is flying under the radar.
The Catamounts come into this game with a 6-2 record, reeling off six straight victories before losing to Bucknell 81-77 on Saturday. They lost their opening game to 5th-ranked Kentucky 73-69, a game in which they gave the Wildcats all they could handle.
Vermont is led by sophomore forward Anthony Lamb, who can impact the game on a multitude of levels. He is their leading scorer averaging 14.9 points per game and leads the team in rebounds at 6.5 per game. He is shooting 52 percent from the field and 38 percent from beyond the arc. At 6’6 he is considered a tweener, playing a combo guard-forward mix. No doubt, he will cause problems for the Golden Eagles.
Marquette is coming off of a tough 73-66 loss at the hands of a solid Georgia team. Before that loss, they reeled off three wins in a row and now stand at 5-3 on the young season.
Leading Marquette in scoring this year is senior guard Andrew Rowsey with 22.6 PPG and 4.3 APG, and sophomore guard Markus Howard is close behind at 21.0 PPG and 3.4 RPG. Sam Hauser is the only other Golden Eagle in double-figures so far with 12.4 PPG and 6.0 RPG.
How they match up
As you can see, these teams are very even in basically every statistical category with the exception of steals. Marquette plays an aggressive brand of defense under Steve Wojciechowski and that could be the difference in this game tonight.
LINE: -3.5 Marquette
This game figures to be close and that 3.5 spread is a good indication of that. Vermont has played solid programs tough this year, look at their five point loss to Kentucky as the prime example. This should be a tight game throughout but I am confident in the Golden Eagles defense doing enough to win outright and cover the 3.5 points.
