Vikings “Crossings” Recap and Review
This week’s episode of Vikings opened with Lagertha and Astrid talking. Lagertha, whom appears to be upset does not believe that Ragnar is dead and said that Ivar was not their to witness his death. Lagertha explained to Astrid that she must take on the burden of ruling, something Ragnar hated and could have possibly killed him. She continues to say that she doesn’t want to disappoint Ragnar, herself, and all the shield maidens that fought to get where she stands.
In Wessex, Aethelwulf is concerned with Ragnar’s sons but King Ecbert tells him he made a deal with Ragnar. Egbert tells Aethelwulf that he can gather men if he wants but Ragnar’s sons will only go after King Aelle.
Meanwhile Ubbe and Sigurd realize that they’re all alone both their parents are dead and nobody would stand with them. For the time being they have no plans to kill Lagertha but the same cannot be said about Ivar. While Lagertha was speaking to the people of Kattegat, Ivar crawled to her seeking justice for his mother. Ivar challenged Lagertha to single combat to which she refuses. Lagertha explained that she doesn’t want him dead. Ivar threatens her that one day he will kill her and her fate is fixed.
Bjorn and the rest of the viking fleet arrived in Spain. Floki revealed that he doesn’t know who he is and what his purpose is anymore. Helga attempted to comfort him by telling him that he’s a boat builder but he said it wasn’t enough. Helga then revealed to Floki that she wants a baby. Floki does not want a child and walked away from her angrily. Still on the boat, King Harald wonders if Bjorn is cursed like his father. King Harald advised his brother, Halfdan to trust no one but themselves and one day he must over come the Lothbroks if not how will he become King of Norway.
Bjorn’s ships make it to land in Algeciras, Spain where they begin to raid. Rollo clearly missed raiding because he had a smile on his face the entire time. While the rest of the vikings Floki set his eyes on a temple. Inside the temple there were men praying and paid no attention to Floki. Soon enough King Harald, Halfdan, and others walked inside becoming confused like Floki. Halfdan said he hated the noise and decided to cut a mans head off. Right after the decapitation the vikings were going to kill more people but Floki stopped them. Floki told King Harald and Halfdan that he would not allow killing in the temple and to kill them they must kill him first. Although King Harald didn’t agree he ordered his men not to kill anyone and left. Helga found an orphan which she planned to keep and take with her until Floki told her no. Helga grew upset and ran off, leaving Floki.
Lagertha visited a seer with the hopes of finding out of she would be killed by a son of Ragnar, the seer said yes.
Rollo, King Harald, Halfdan, Bjorn, Hvitserk stood atop a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean. They have made it to where no viking has gone and farther than Ragnar Lothbrok.
Ivar was foraging a sword when Odin appeared to him. Odin told Ivar that his father was dead, killed by serpents. Odin visited Ubbe, then Sigurd. He also appeared to Bjorn and Hvitserk on the top of the hill. Bjorn said “my father is dead.”
“Crossings” wasn’t a bad episode especially after Ragnar was killed. It was definitely sad watching Lagertha cry over Ragnar, I always thought they’d get together again at some point but that won’t be happening. It seems that soon enough King Harald will go against Bjorn maybe not this season but the next. This season has a lot of conflict already and adding more will make the show messy. King Harald and Halfdan are great characters and I love when all the vikings gather and fight together but it will be interesting to see what happens, if it even happens. Floki has been around since season one but I feel like he doesn’t get a lot of screen time which he should. I liked the scenes of him and Helga in this episode. I guess I’d like to see more of them because we don’t really get that and also because Floki is one of my favorite characters. Now that the vikings have made it to the Mediterranean I’m excited to see what Bjorn will do in terms of leading and his future plans especially now that he’s aware of his father’s death. Right now it’s too soon to determine whether the show has gone bad because their main character has been killed off. Many people stopped watching Vikings because Ragnar is not there anymore or they aren’t sure whether they should keep watching. If anyone who is reading this feels that way then you should give the show a chance. Like I said it’s too soon to tell, this episode was great and you don’t know if you’ll like it. It does suck that Ragnar was killed off but the show goes on and there are still many characters left on the show. What did you think of this episode of Vikings?
