As we get further into the season, conference standings have began to fall into place. For Conference USA, it’s clear who the leaders of the pack are. Marshall, Western Kentucky, and Louisiana Tech continue to dominate week in and week out. C-USA currently has two bowl eligible teams, with two more teams that could put themselves one game away with a win this week. To anyone who follows the conference, those may seem like low numbers. Last year they were able to boast 7 bowl eligible teams, 8 if you count Old Dominion. Teams like Rice, MTSU, ODU, and FIU are all fighting for their lives this week with only three wins on the season. Here are my game predictions for Week 8 in C-USA:

Marshall 45, North Texas 13

LSU 48, WKU 38

Southern Miss 38, Charlotte 17

Rice 23, Army 20

Louisiana Tech 44, Middle Tennessee 37

Florida International (FIU) 27, Old Dominion 14

Florida Atlantic (FAU) 24, UTEP 13

Those results would propel Southern Miss and LA Tech to 5 wins on the season and a perfect position to make themselves bowl eligible next weekend.

You lose this week. Now what?

Unfortunately for MTSU, they will fall to 3-5 on the year, with not so much of a bright future. Their remaining schedule features Marshall, @ FAU, North Texas, and @ UTSA. I see two more potential points in the ‘L’ column from that list, which would make them 5-7 and short of a bowl for their first time since entering C-USA.

Another team that will fall short with a loss this week is ODU. They still have to face WKU, Southern Miss, and FAU; three games they aren’t likely to win.

There’s a lot of middle of the pack teams in C-USA this year. That’s not necessarily a bad thing until you have more teams missing out on post-season play.
