No team in English Premier League history has won the title and then been relegated the following season. Leicester City may accomplish that feat this year.

Leicester are currently 17th in the table, one point out of the relegation zone. Rumors swirl about manager Claudio Raneri potentially being sacked should Leicester City fail to stay in top flight competition. Star players Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez haven’t played to the level they did last season. The loss of midfielder N’golo Kante to Chelsea has been a factor as well.

The only bright spot the fans at King Power Stadium have to look forward to is Champions League football. A potential scenario of Leicester City winning the Champions League and being relegated domestically are in play.

When it comes to table positioning, Leicester have played with fire all season. Teams like Swansea City, Hull City, and Crystal Palace, despite their positioning have played better as of late and are more than ready to take control of their destinies and battle to stay in top flight competition. Leicester appear all but defeated, both on the field and in the locker room. Rumors swell that Raneri has lost the players, and that the hangover of last year’s winning run has negatively affected this squad.

Should the team be relegated, what would the outcome be? A good example would be what’s happening with Newcastle United. Newcastle were relegated last season and the team suffered a setback in retaining talent. Two particular players, Georigio Wynaldym and Moussia Sissoko left for the top Premier League clubs Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, respectively. The rest of the squads key members went out on season loans to top flight competition clubs to keep their level. It’s the hope of the club board that many of the loaned players will come back should Newcastle get promoted.

For Leicester, there isn’t a great chance their star players will play in Championship level competition. Jamie Vardy is no stranger to the league, and leagues lower, but after being at the top he’ll likely want to stay there. This includes Mahrez and other key players of the team such as Marc Albrighton and Danny Drinkwater.

Things don’t look bright at the King Power Stadium and if Raneri and Co. can’t right the ship and stay in the Premier League, we may not see Leicester City reach glory for a while.
