What is Wrong with Auburn?
The Auburn football program was a preseason favorite and many even predicted them to make it to the National Championship game. As of now, it is not looking too good for the Tigers. The only way it is looking like it may happen is if the Tigers have another miracle-type season as they had back in 2013. The Tigers are now 2-2, and 0-2 in conference play. They still have four ranked opponents to play, with all being in the top 15. The Tigers must win out to win anything, but I am sure Auburn fans everywhere are thinking, “ Hey, lets just make it to a bowl game”.
Auburn starting quarterback coming into the season, Jeremy Johnson, had fans excited and he was even considered as a Heisman hopeful. Johnson played outstanding in the games he played in last season. The first game against Louisville, many people were probably thinking “uh oh” as they watched him play. Even though Auburn won the game, there were probably several eyebrows being raised at the quarterback. Then Auburn went on to struggle against Jacksonville State and LSU. That is when head coach, Gus Malzahn, decided to make a change. Malzahn announced that quarterback Sean White will start against Mississippi State. However, was that really the best decision?
The Tigers will face San Jose State Saturday, October 3, and then they will have a bye week. With the bye week soon approaching, Malzahn should have just let Johnson finish the two games before the bye, and based on his performance, made a decision after the bye week to prepare for Kentucky. Malzahn probably thought that Johnson would be another Cam Newton or Nick Marshall, but he is not. Malzahn has his offense, and he does not plan to change it. If the offense were centered on Johnson and his abilities, maybe his performance would have been better. He is not a runner like Newton and Marshall. Johnson is not the only problem. The defense has lost several key players to injuries, and star receiver, Duke Williams, just is not getting the ball. Although Malzahn may not want to change the offense, he has to do something, because right now it is not looking too good for the Tigers.
