Where in the world is Justin Blackmon?
Justin Blackmon, the two-time Biletnikoff award winner for most outstanding college wide receiver and fifth overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft has not suited up for the Jaguars in over 21 months due to suspensions from repeatedly failing drug tests.
Jaguars GM David Caldwell spoke today about the likelihood, or rather unlikelihood of Blackmon ever suiting up for the team again. “I have not heard anything and I guess I harbor a little bit of hope but realistically I think when you’re away from the game for two-and-a-half years what you were once is not what you probably will be,” Caldwell said. “Your skills do erode and especially if you’re not staying in tip-top shape and you’re not in football shape. I don’t know to expect but I would say common sense would probably be if you haven’t played football in two-and-a-half years apparently that’s not a priority for you.”
Blackmon was a great talent and had shown signs of becoming a dominant receiver in the NFL, but his personal demons have not allowed him to make his football career a priority. The Jaguars have not cut Blackmon, and Caldwell has said multiple times that the team does not plan to do so. Blackmon’s spot on the reserve/suspended list means he does not count against the roster limit or salary cap, and the Jaguars do not have to pay his salary. His contract paused upon his suspension, so he would have two and a half years left on his deal with the Jaguars if he was to return to the NFL. Here is hoping we see Blackmon play in the NFL again.
