Whether you like him or hate him, Alex Rodriguez has become the 29th member of baseball’s illustrious 3,000-hit club. The last two members have been Yankees (Jeter was the last in 2011), but the 30th member will not be. Here are the top ten active players that are the closest to reaching the 3,000-hit plateau. Note: Miguel Tejada is still considered active.

The list is filled with aging veterans with the youngest player being the most likely, 32 year-old Miguel Cabrera. Still 700+ hits away, he’ll need to stay healthy and produce at a decent rate to eclipse 3,000. If he plays until he is forty, he will need to average 100+ hits in every season, not an easy feat now, or in five years.

I would love to see Ichiro hit the mark (he has if you include his Japanese stats), but with under 50 hits this season in a part-time capacity with the Marlins, it is unlikely he will get many more opportunities to continue his career after this season. You do not have many teams wanting to sign a 42 year-old outfielder, when they can find someone younger and cheaper in their farm system.

With young guns coming up to the big-leagues like Bryce Harper, Kris Bryant and Carlos Correa we have a new group of players to watch for years to come, and we may be having this discussion about one of them in the next decade.

Who do you think will be the next member of the 3,000-hit club? Let me know in the comments below.
