Who Will Not Survive ‘Avengers: Infinity War’?: MFST Predicts
While the thoughts and opinions mentioned in the article below are sheer speculations on my part, there is a chance that one, some, all or none of these things may happen in the upcoming Infinity War film(s). Also, if you are not completely caught up with the eighteen films that comprise the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there are mild spoilers to be found here for them and the Infinity Gauntlet comic series as well. Proceed at your own risk!
We all know that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is due for a shakeup, and with the combination of the Big Bad- Thanos (whose name is derived from the Greek word Thanatos, “God of Death”) and expiring contracts, it’s safe to say that some of our favorite characters will not be making it through the film unscathed. I have a list of some of the characters that I think will not make it through the film, or if they do, they’ll be forever altered.
Loki – I’m starting out with arguably the most popular villain (no argument if you exclude Killmonger from Black Panther). We see during the climactic battle during the finale of Thor: Ragnarok that Loki retrieves the Tesseract (vessel for the Space Stone), and in the trailer for Infinity War we see him offering up the Tesseract to someone. We can only assume that he’s offering it to Thanos as evidenced by the fact that we see Thanos crushing the Tesseract with his bare hands and later drop the Space Stone into the Infinity Gauntlet next to the Power Stone. I also imagine that everyone on the Asgardian ship from the end of Thor: Ragnarok will be wiped out as a show of power by Thanos and Loki will be among the body count.
The Nova Corps and most- if not all- of Xandar – Since we know that Thanos obtains the Power Stone before the Space Stone it stands to reason that he will travel to Xandar (the place the Guardians of the Galaxy brought the Power Stone to at the end of that film). It also stands to reason that the Nova Corps will not simply hand the Stone over to him because he asks politely.
Groot – I know what you’re thinking, “But Groot almost died already!” False. The Groot that died in Guardians of the Galaxy is dead. The new one is actually his offspring – they are not the same character. Groot is superfluous. Other than being there to sell toys (I’m looking at you, Baby Groot), he doesn’t really bring anything special to the battle and therefore is expendable.
Vision – This one is pretty straightforward. Vision gets his power, his very life from the Mind Stone embedded in his forehead. We’ve seen in the trailer that Thanos’ minions, The Black Order, use the scepter that once contained said Mind Stone to pry it from his skull. I don’t like his chances in Infinity War.
James Rhodes/War Machine – He was crippled in Civil War and I just don’t see him making it through this film – and yes, I am aware of the Stark tech he has that allows him to walk. He could honestly go either way – he might make it through, but he might not. I’m leaning towards him not seeing the end of the film.
Hawkeye – Poor Clint. Going up against a cosmically-powered superbeing with the power to THROW A MOON AT HIS ENEMIES…with a bow and arrow. I don’t see him being much help other than perhaps nobly sacrificing himself to save one of the other heroes. Speaking of noble sacrifices…
Steve Rogers – Not only is Chris Evans’ contract up, I think the character has run its course. There are several characters who, in the comics, have taken over the mantle of Captain America after Rogers either is stripped of his title (gives it up due to internal ethical conflicts) or dies (at least temporarily). Both Sam Wilson (Falcon) and Bucky Barnes (Winter Soldier/White Wolf) have become Captain America. There is also some talk about Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel) inheriting the leadership role Rogers had and leading the heroes to victory over Thanos in the second installment of the story. We do see him going one-on-one with Thanos in the trailer, using both hands to grapple with the Infinity Gauntlet. It will not end well for Steve Rogers at all.
Iron Man – I believe that this is another character that has run his course and his heir apparent has already been introduced. As fun a character as Tony Stark is when played by Robert Downey Jr., I don’t think that he will make it through the entire story. The heir apparent I mentioned? Peter Parker – Spider-Man. This is pure speculation on my part, but I think this is a trail they could blaze, especially where they are headed into Phase IV and beyond and need some of their other characters to spend some time in the spotlight.
Nebula – Thanos’ daughter, who has been trained since birth to be a warrior. She is constantly pitted against Gamora in combat, and every time she was defeated Thanos replaced part of her organic body with cybernetics (she confesses this to Gamora in the second Guardians of the Galaxy film). In the comic, Nebula is kept in a state of intense agony – essentially a living death. She’s not a character that brings anything special to the story aside from being Thanos’ daughter and the “sister” of Gamora. Gamora is the hero, Nebula a villain (at least through circumstance – I don’t think she’s really a bad person but she was forced to be).
So, that’s my list. It may be much longer, and it may be much shorter. Either way, I am sure you can agree that not everyone is going to be around at the end of the movie. I don’t expect Game of Thrones level deaths, but the body count will be high. Don’t forget Tony Stark’s infamous promise to Loki near the end of the first Avengers film, “Because if we can’t protect the Earth, you can be damned well sure that we’ll avenge it.”
Who do you think will be killed off in Infinity War?
