Australian running back Jarryd Hayne is retiring from the NFL after one season, choosing instead to pursue a chance to compete with the Fiji Rugby Sevens in this summer’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. I have seen numerous media outlets shocked and awed by this news. Really? Why is this even news?

On a bad 49ers team last year that dealt with numerous injuries, specifically to the running back position, Hayne could barely crack the rotation. He was not a good American football player. Plain and simple. Carrying the rock 17 times for 52 yards with an average of 3.1 YPC should not be highlighted by the press.

He is not retiring due to fear of head injuries, or to spend time with his family. Jarryd Hayne is hanging it up because he would likely not have made the roster this season under Chip Kelly’s tutelage, and he wanted to play a sport he was actually good at. Rugby.

“I am retiring from the NFL because the Fiji Rugby Sevens team reached out to me about the opportunity to join the team for the upcoming Olympics, and I simply could not pass that chance up,” Hayne said in a statement. “The Olympics has been something I have admired since I was a little boy, and it is an opportunity I feel very similar to me joining the NFL.”

So go play for Fiji, Jarryd Hayne, because your NFL career was a stinker and your 15-minutes of fame is thankfully over.
